Job summary

The South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SCAS) is seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated Midwife to join the Central Education Team at Newbury Education Centre as an Education Manager, to develop and deliver the trusts Maternity education provision.

This post will be a part time position of 2 days per week for a 12-month fixed term period. There are also bank opportunities available.

The successful candidate will focus on the development of maternity education to both clinical and non-clinical staff across the trust. The individual will work with the education teams based across the trust (Newbury, Bicester and Whiteley) to provide expertise and advice in the challenges of maternity and new born care within the ambulance service.

The role will also be pivotal in delivering the Pre-hospital Obstetric and Neonatal Emergency Course (PHONE), working with the current faculty from Royal Berkshire Hospital and Oxford University Hospital. The successful candidate will work with the education team to create and develop an adapted version of the PHONE course to support the Ambulance Technician, Associate Ambulance Practitioner and Emergency Care Assistant Roles, ensuring all staff have access to adequate maternity development and training.

Main duties of the job

The Trust has extensive education programmes ranging from non-clinical apprenticeships to paramedicine clinical training programmes planned for existing and new staff, in addition to statutory & mandatory annual training (face to face) and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) activities, we are seeking an education manager (Midwife) to support and develop these programmes. As an education manager, you will be part of the team as well as have responsibility for the individual portfolio of maternity and to provide subject matter expertise as directed by the Head of Education.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate outstanding clinical, supervisory and communication skills (written, verbal and interpersonal). Suitable candidates must work well under pressure remaining calm, focused and approachable. Successful candidates will hold current professional registration with degree level education. Successful candidates may be expected to undertake further formal educational programmes to meet the teaching requirements of the role and a positive attitude to personal development is expected.

Job responsibilities

To support the SEMs in the implementation of the Trusts educational strategy and strategic plan

To be responsible for the delivery and development of midwifery clinical and non-clinical education and training in a classroom setting and operational environment (when required) in accordance with the Education Departments policies and procedures, communicating education and clinical practice education of a complex, sensitive nature individually, or to groups, planning personal programmes of work when not required to be based in the Education Centres, to best meet Trust needs

To contribute to reducing the risk of clinical incidents and serious incident reviews (SIRIs) for maternity related events

To work within an allocated operational area of the Trust, liaising and supporting the Heads of Operations, Clinical Operations Managers, Team Leaders and Clinical Mentors in the delivery of education and training as determined by the Head of Education and SEMs

To provide best practice advice in a clinical setting for mentors and staff in relation to clinical practice, governance and education

To provide practice education and clinical leadership, mentorship and training to Trust registrants, clinicians and non-clinicians, assessing the competence and fitness to practice

To support the SEMs in ensuring that senior managers are kept fully informed of all educational and development issues, assuming central portfolio responsibility for an allocated area of education, as directed by the SEMs

To plan and manage your individual workload, in conjunction with the SEM and in accordance with the Education delivery needs, seeking guidance from peers and external references as appropriate

To facilitate the delivery of clinical and non-clinical education in a classroom environment, liaising closely with the subject matter experts, ensuring compliance with departmental requirements

To ensure that all current Trust policies and procedures are implemented and remain in compliance, and to propose policy change (specifically in relation to clinical policies and procedures linking to contemporary practice), which may impact across all areas of the Trust

To work closely with the SEMs in the fostering of a working and learning environment which is conducive to learning and development, ensuring consistent delivery and content compliance of education across the Trust

To work closely with the Higher Education Institutes, supporting them as required and deemed appropriate by the SEM responsible for Higher Education / Practice Education

To work with the SEMs to ensure the Education Departments maintain and assure systems of work which comply with clinical regulatory bodies and other educational requirements, providing staff with the relevant support to maintain their own individual registration

To ensure the accuracy, validity and security of all staff records, and to ensure that information generated meets and maintains all necessary professional accreditation standards

To maintain strong working relationships with all directorates of the Trust

To liaise and support all aspects of education within the Trust

To support the development of a portfolio of technologies within the education agenda, acting as subject matter expert, using clinical benchmarking and recent research findings to provide high quality education materials or learning activities

To use all appropriate methods to disseminate educational information to all staff

To take part in the review process of education across all areas of the Trust

To provide advice and guidance, where necessary, on registrational processes to members of staff and students with regards to professional body registration

  • Registration on the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) professional body
