Specialist Midwife for women with complex social needs

Job summary
The postholder will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide and co-ordinate the highest standard of care for women who, for a variety of reasons are considered to be vulnerable. These groups will include women for whom there are significant mental health or current domestic violence issues, illicit drug and alcohol use, a learning disability, pregnant teenagers, asylum seekers/refugees and where there are child protection concerns. The focus of the role may change according to identified need.
To be an autonomous practitioner for the care of mothers and babies who have complex social needs.
To support junior staff and students.
To act as an expert practitioner in working with women who have complex social needs and their families
To be an expert in safeguarding processes and offer support in this area to the wider team.
The postholder will be responsible for identifying gaps in areas of service provision and developing strategies to address areas of deficit.
The postholder will provide direct midwifery care throughout the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods to selected highly vulnerable women with high complex needs.
The postholder will participate in the community on-call rota providing support as needed across the service.
Main duties of the job
Promote a woman centred service which ensures safe and effective care throughout their maternity experience
Ensure effective communication with clients, relatives, carers and colleagues, acting as an advocate for the client
Provide holistic, evidence based, women centred care
Demonstrate that women and their partners / relatives where relevant are involved in both decisions affecting their care and wellbeing, and in service development. Practice in accordance with the professional, ethical and legal codes of the Nursing and Midwifery Council, and Trust's protocols and guidelines.
Practice within Data Protection/ Confidentiality/ Caldicott principles.
