Ophthalmology Fellow in Vitreoretinal Surgery

Job summary
We are looking for a Vitreo-retinal fellow to join us for an initial one year fixed term appointment. The post will be based at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading and the Prince Charles Eye Unit, Windsor. The appointee will be expected to become a full member of a progressive and forward looking department. The post is closely supervised with VR surgical experience available.
This is a whole time post with a minimum of 10 programmed activities.
Main duties of the job
Vitreo- retinal surgery and clinics will form the majority of the timetable but the Fellow will also be expected to contribute to the Medical Retina and the General Ophthalmic services and form part of the team covering inpatients and on call work.
The post holder will also be expected to undertake ROP screening for departmental cover. Continuing education, professional development and teaching are actively encouraged and research and audit opportunities will be available for the right candidate.
The appointee would be required to undertake annual appraisal and contribute towards their professional development plan. The exact details of the job plan will be agreed on appointment and will depend upon the area of expertise of the successful applicant and requirements of the department.
The appointee will be expected to become a full member of a progressive and forward looking department involved actively in Clinical Governance and Quality improvement projects. Continuing education, professional development and teaching are actively encouraged and research and audit opportunities will be available.
About us
The department undertakes approximately 7000 day-case procedures and provides approximately 100,000 outpatient attendances and over 20,000 Eye Casualty attendances per annum, serving a population of approximately 1 million.
At the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading the service is located in the Eye Block and includes the Eye Outpatient Department and the dedicated Eye Day Case Unit. Inpatient care is provided on Dorrell Ward for Head and Neck patients. There are dedicated eye theatres with Bausch and Lomb equipment for phaco and posterior Vitrectomy, cyclodiode and indirect lasers and recording equipment for training and research purposes.
The Prince Charles Eye Unit in Windsor is on the site of the King Edward VII Hospital. There are two fully commissioned ophthalmic theatres within the unit undertaking day case admissions and minor operations including emergency and elective vitreo-retinal procedures with anaesthetic cover.
Ophthalmic Accident and Emergency services are provided in both the Royal Berkshire Hospital and Prince Charles Eye Unit, and run adjacent to the clinics.The outpatient facilities at all sites include up to date equipment including OCT with angiography and autofluorecsence, HRT, anterior and wide field OPTOS posterior segment photography with FFA and ICG, ultrasound, YAG/SLT and multi-spot argon lasers, Pentacam corneal scanning and IOL Master biometry.
