Job summary

We are looking to appoint a substantive Consultant Anaesthetist (10PA), with an interest in Trauma and Regional Anaesthesia to support increasing demand, to develop patient pathways and work collaboratively with our Trauma team on service development.

Our department has a reputation throughout the region for high anaesthetic standards and training. We are well represented at senior management level and on several national committees and organisations.We have a reputation for encouraging individual interests and for clinical, educational and managerial innovations. We aim to provide high standards for our patients and are a happy, cohesive department. We have recently been awarded Royal College of Anaesthetists ACSA accreditation, and have begun working towards applying for University Department status. We were one of the top performing departments within the Trust, based on a recent staff feedback survey.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an enthusiastic and collaborative team player with a special interest and recognised expertise in the provision of anaesthesia in trauma and regional anaesthetics.

The post holder will share clinical and managerial leadership within the Anaesthetic department with the present consultants. There is an expectation that the successful candidate will work flexibly with colleagues to ensure the maintenance of a continuing high quality service meeting patient needs and to raise departmental profiles through teaching and education.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have duties that include provision of anaesthesia, pre-operative assessment, post-operative visits, administration, teaching and audit.
  • Work in multidisciplinary teams providing high quality care to patients and work well with colleagues providing an advisory and consultation service.
  • Participate actively and enthusiastically in the clinical governance, teaching and management activities of the department.
  • Participation and involvement in meetings and business planning in the anaesthesia service.

About us

Our theatres provide elective, emergency and trauma surgery within multiple operating theatres allowing a throughput of ~26,000 cases each year. The department works with the multi-disciplinary team from numerous specialities; including ENT, Orthopaedics, Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, General surgery etc. to deliver surgical care safely and of a high standard. The department works to support the latest technologies, such as robotic surgery and have two state of the art Robots used for Urology, Upper GI and Colorectal surgeries.

The main site at RBH comprises of 20 operating theatres, in three separate complexes and one ring fenced Elective Orthopaedic Unit.

  • South Wing Theatres - 7 theatres
  • Redlands Theatres - Ring fenced Orthopaedic Unit, 4 theatres.
  • Central Theatres - 5 theatres
  • Maternity Theatres - 3 theatres, 1 procedural room

Prince Charles Eye Unit and West Berkshire Community Hospital provide elective services within a self-contained day bed unit:

  • West Berkshire - comprises of 2 operating theatres and 1 procedural room
  • Prince Charles Eye Unit - comprises of 2 operating theatres. The team specialise in Ophthalmology only within the unit.

The department also supports services provided in Interventional and diagnostic Radiology, as well as external contracts with BHFT Dental Surgery, Prospect Park and Broadmoor.

  • Full registration with the GMC/eligible for registration
  • FRCA of equivalent qualification
  • Within 6 months of CCT in Anaesthesia at interview date
  • Membership of the Royal College of Anaesthetists of the United Kingdom or equivalent
  • Current Advanced Life Support training

Desirable

  • Higher degree or other relevant qualifications related to anaesthetic practice

Clinical Experience, Knowledge & Skills

Essential

  • Fully trained in Anaesthesia - Level of training equivalent to that required to obtain a CCT in Anaesthesia in the UK as defined by the RCoA
