HCA will be expected to perform renal-specific competences relating to haemodialysis skills. You will be trained in these abilities. You will be required to havesome renal specialised knowledge to be able to provide excellent care to the haemodialysis patients. The HCA haemodialysis skills clinical competencies will thus also need to be fulfilled. Following the training, you will be expected to perform these renal specific skills duties among others as an HCA assigned on the Acute Dialysis Team or in the Chronic Haemodialysis Units.

  • Preparation of equipment for haemodialysis.
  • Pre & post HD observations- blood pressure, pulse, oxygen saturation, glucose monitoring.
  • Pre & post HD weighing of patients including calculation of wheelchair weight.
  • Assisting patients with manual handling- transfer using hoist/ Banana board or SARA Steady.
  • Using of therapy monitor.
  • Lining & priming of HD machines.
  • Disconnecting of patients from HD (patients with fistula as vascular access).
  • Cleaning/ Disinfecting of HD machines.
  • Appropriate segregation & disposal of waste.
  • HD materials stocking levels and ordering.
  • To use online Transport booking system (SCAS).
  • Efficient in using renal IT system- CV5.
  • To escalate concerns when observed in a timely and appropriate manner to the registered nurse.

Acting always in the patient's best interests.

Protecting and maintaining the patient's privacy and dignity at all times.

Providing individualised care for a diverse group of patients respecting personal beliefs and preferences.

Alert the Registered Practitioner and/or Ward/ Department Manager to any change or concern relating to the welfare of the patient in a timely manner.

Undertake specific clinical skills relevant to clinical area following training and assessment of competence e.g. performing venepuncture, cannulation and escorting patients.

Provides enhanced levels of care to patients requiring additional supervision and support to ensure their personal safety and wellbeing needs are met.

Provides supervision and guidance to junior / less-experienced staff.
