Band 6 Associate Vascular Access Clinical Nurse Specialist

We are looking to recruit a Band 6 Associate Clinical Nurse Specialist to provide vascular access advice, guidance and support to facilitate care that incorporates high quality clinical practice without supervision but under the guidance of the Lead Clinical Nurse Specialist in Vascular Access in collaboration with the multidisciplinary teams and in line with local and national guidance.

The successful candidate will have a key role in setting the standards and contribute to improving IV care for both inpatients and outpatients. We are looking for individuals who are well organized, able to use their initiative and can ensure best practice to ensure outstanding patient care is delivered. You will be working under the direction of the Lead VA Nurse to ensure that Vascular Access and IV care are evidence-based and that this reflects on education programmes.

The post holder will also undertake regular audits to assess the impact of education interventions.

Experience with PICC & Midline insertion and ultrasound techniques are essential.

Due to the high clinical focus of the role the successful applicant must be highly motivated and enthusiastic with excellent communication skills and sound clinical background.

Main duties of the job

The specialist nursing role will actively contribute to the ongoing development of the Vascular Access Service across the trust and ensure that it delivers and promotes best practice in the care and management of all vascular access devices, promoting aseptic non-touch technique to reduce the risk of device related complications and in particular infection.

The post holder will provide specialist service and support and deputise for their line manager in the management of their clinical specialty and in conjunction with the Infection, prevention and control team. This will involve dealing with complex situations and having to take appropriate action in a variety of settings.

  • Be expert in peripheral intravenous cannulation.
  • Be expert in the insertion of Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs) and Midlines. Also, removal of tunneled catheters.
  • Undertake training and become proficient in utilizing ultrasound guided venous cannulation techniques (e.g. peripheral and central veins). Use ultrasound to identify common anatomical variations (e.g. thrombosis of target vein).
  • Be able to verify tip catheter position and recognition of complications such as pneumothorax using image intensification, ECG technology and tracking devices. Ordering and interpreting radiological investigations such as CXR when necessary.
  • Troubleshooting of vascular access related complications.
  • Supporting training and education for staff, patients and others.
