Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join the respiratory physiology team here at Royal Berkshire as a Senior Physiologist.

Please note although this post is being advertised as a permanent full time position, the option of part time and/or fixed term is available to the right candidate.

Main duties of the job

To train departmental staff to perform the basic respiratory physiological measurements in accordance with ARTP/BTS National Guidelines and local standards.

To mentor and assist in the development and training of physiology staff members.

The instruction of student nurses and doctors, trainee physiotherapists and pharmacists, junior doctors, staff nurses, GPs and practice nurses in various aspects of physiology.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To supervise the physiology team in the daily running of the service involving:

Perform diagnostic tests to nationally recognised standards for accuracy and quality.

To carry out the following investigations:

  • Spirometry (measurement of dynamic flows and volumes)
  • Measurement of static lung volumes by helium dilution technique, nitrogen wash-out and body plethysmography.
  • Gas transfer for Carbon Monoxide by single breath technique
  • Bronchodilator Response Testing
  • Field exercise tests (6 minute walk test; shuttle test; 6 minute step exercise test).
  • Ambulatory oxygen assessment (when required).
  • Measurement of respiratory muscle strength (MIP/MEP; SNIP tests; postural Spirometry, peak cough flow).
  • To perform hypoxic inhalation tests (fitness to fly).
  • To perform histamine challenge tests.
  • To perform earlobe blood gas sampling and analysis.
  • To perform fraction exhaled Nitric Oxide testing (FeNO)
  • To perform a range of diagnostic tests in patients who have suspected sleep related breathing disorders.
  • To perform CPAP Trial set ups for patients with diagnosed sleep disordered breathing
  • To perform the review of CPAP therapy for patients with diagnosed sleep disordered breathing who are on CPAP treatment.
  • To perform the initiation and review of therapy for patients receiving NIV treatment.
  • To provide the mobile respiratory physiology service at the trust spoke sites.
  • To provide Cardio-Pulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET). This includes investigation of exertional dypsnoea and pre-operative assessment.
  • To provide Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB) challenge tests for the investigation of exercise induced asthma.

Education

Essential

  • Scientific knowledge acquired through formal training to Clinical Physiology BSc or equivalent level.
  • Recognised ARTP Qualification in physiological measurement.

Desirable

  • RCCP registration or working towards equivalent pathway.
  • Evidence of attending 'Train the trainer' course

Experience

Essential

  • Minimum of 2 years experience as a Clinical Respiratory Physiologist.
  • Experience of supervising junior physiology staff and students

Desirable

  • Experience of non-routine tests such as flight assessment and airway challenge.
  • Experience of remote monitoring of home CPAP patients
