Job summary

To promote and use play across the Paediatric department for children and young people who use this service.

Main duties of the job

To work as part of the Play specialist team to provideplay and recreational needs of individual children of anyage in hospital by providing a safe environment andappropriate materials. Promoting normal developmentof children by using play as a development aid.

Job responsibilities

1. To maintain and supervise play activities for individual and groups ofchildren and young people in hospital, according to their individualneeds and as part of the overall care plan. Using knowledge of childdevelopment when selecting play activities.2. To work as part of the play specialist team, to select and applytherapeutic play programmes to include preparation for invasive andnon invasive procedures, distraction therapy, and post procedural play,under the supervision and guidance of a qualified Hospital PlaySpecialist.3. To plan a programme of daily play activities for the playroom/department.4.Understands the importance of the patient as the centre of the healthcare system. Demonstrates that he/ she consults and involves patientsin decisions about their care and wellbeing.5.To provide support to families under stress and in crisisHospital Play Leader- Page 2 of 46.To respect the individuality, values, and cultural and religious diversity ofpatients and their families, and contribute to the provision of a servicesensitive to these needs.7.To ensure that up to date written records and activity data aremaintained in accordance with Professional and Trust standards8. Works as an effective team member. Understands the importance ofteam working in the delivery of high quality care. Demonstrates goodcommunication with children, carers and ward team.9. Establish effective communication both verbal and written with childrenand families and all members of the multidisciplinary team.10.To ensure that up to date written records and activity data aremaintained in accordance with Professional and Trust standards11.Supports the Ward Sister/ Charge Nurse to ensuring the clinical areapractices within Data Protection/ Confidentiality/ Caldecott principles12.Be responsible for maintaining play equipment in accordance withTrust health and safety standards13.Be responsible for maintaining play equipment in accordance withTrust health and safety standards14.Is able to identify how complaints may arise and how they should bedealt with.15.Assist in the monitoring and maintenance of the health, safety andsecurity of self and others in work area.
