Job summary

Applications are warmly welcomed to join a specialist multidisciplinary team contributing to the provision of our comprehensive geriatric medicine service. We are looking to appoint one new Specialist Grade Doctor to join our dynamic and enthusiastic team. The post will involve working on one of the Acute Elderly Care wards in the Elderly Medicine department at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading. This is a new post, in order to enhance the care of our patients on our 28 bedded specialist Elderly Care wards, providing more efficient and consistent care. The appointee will be primarily responsible for 14 patients on the ward, also providing prospective cover for their colleague managing the remainder of the ward. This is a 10 PA (DCC/SPA 8.5/1.5) substantive post in Elderly Care Medicine. As a forward thinking and adaptable department, we would welcome applications from candidates wishing to work less than full time. The post will also include participation in the Elderly Care ward cover on call rota with a commitment to working 1:8 weekends.

Main duties of the job

To provide, with colleagues, Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment service for frail older patients admitted under the care of the Elderly Care team.

To manage the patients on an acute Elderly Care ward, working closely with colleagues in the multidisciplinary team and providing senior support to the medical team.

Enhance and support our Elderly Care Movement Disorders service, including Movement Disorders clinic and input to the Steering Group.

To provide on-call weekend (& Bank Holiday) ward cover for the Elderly Care wards on a 1 in 8 rota (4 hours/day Saturday & Sunday = 0.33 PAs).

Prospective cover for each other's annual leave will be shared equally between the senior team and often involves cover of the other inpatient wards.

Ensure patient confidentiality is maintained and comply with the GMC requirements of Duties of a Doctor at all times.

Active participation in monthly clinical governance meetings within the department.

Involvement in the management and development of the Movement Disorders service, alongside other consultants, and senior nurses.

Support and mentoring for the Specialty Doctors within the Elderly Care department.

Participation and involvement in meetings and other business in the elderly care service.

Responsibility for the supervision of specialty and resident doctors within the department, and participation in the training of medical students and student physician associates.

About us

RBFT has a significant cohort of SAS doctors, including approximately 5 Specialist Grades, 16 Associate Specialists, 58 Specialty Doctors, 1 Staff Grade and 1 Hospital Practitioner. The group is strongly supported by the Trust, where the SAS Charter has been implemented. There is full representation of the group at Local Negotiating Committee (LNC). The Trust employs a SAS Tutor and is in the process of advertising for a SAS Advocate. The SAS committee offer support and guidance in specific areas such as recruitment and wellbeing, and organise regular SAS forums, career development events and social opportunities. Career progression is strongly encouraged at all levels of experience within the grade, supported through the appraisal process and SAS development funding.
