Senior Staff Nurse HIV - Internal Only

The post holder will work as a skilled practitioner and will be responsible for the delivery of patient focused programmes of care, which address the complex and changing needs of the client group requiring HIV care.

To promote HIV care to optimally meet the needs of clients within the Trust and wider health community in order to enhance their health outcomes and experience of HIV services.

At this level of expertise, the post-holder is able to exercise clinical judgement and decision making about patient needs in terms or long range goals or plans. Maintains a high profile in the clinical area, acting as a role model for good practice. The post-holder is responsible for undertaking and recording a comprehensive nursing assessment and planning, delivering and evaluating high standards of evidenced based specialist HIV nursing care to a diverse group of patients. The post holder ensures smooth running of the department in the absence of the Clinical Nurse Specialist HIV, works autonomously in outreach settings and provides clinical and managerial leadership to nursing and support staff.

Provides specialist, interdisciplinary education and training to other staff and students. It is expected that the post holder will balance their working week both clinically and administratively and expected to cover satellite services or outreach as required.

Main duties of the job

The delivery of nurse led HIV clinics, using professional expertise to manage and treat patients within scope of practice referring to the Clinical Nurse specialist and medical colleagues when appropriate.

To ensure patient care is delivered with care and compassion, sensitive to the needs for respect, privacy and dignity.

Expected to deliver HIV care without direct supervision to medically stable patient cohort and is accountable for the care delivered and any omissions in care. Has the ability to manage socially complex situations leaning on support from the Clinical Nurse Specialist HIV, Safeguarding Health Advisor (HA) and HA team, and Sisters/Clinical Nurse Specialists in Sexual Health and contraception.

Manage and communicate complex sensitive information to patients and other agencies.

Demonstrate expert practice in communicating with patients in ways that empower them to make informed choices about their HIV care and general sexual health, being sensitive to issues of age, sexuality, ethnicity, spirituality, cultural needs and socio-economic status.
