Are you interested in training to become a Diagnostic Radiographer?

An exciting opportunity has arisen to undertake a degree apprenticeship programme at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust in association with the University of Exeter.

The successful candidate will work within the Radiology department of the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust as an apprentice Radiographer full time, with protected off-the-job training time to support their studies at the University of Exeter.

The degree apprenticeship is academically challenging and requires a highly motivated individual with excellent time management skills and an aptitude for learning. Upon completion of the degree apprenticeship, the post holder with earn a BSc (Hons) in Diagnostic Radiography and Imaging and will be eligible to register with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Diagnostic Radiographer.

The successful candidate will have a proven history of delivering high quality, compassionate patient care with the qualities required to meet the HCPCs standards of proficiency for Diagnostic Radiographers.

Main duties of the job

  • To work in the multidisciplinary Radiology team working towards the trusts and department goals of delivering an outstanding imaging service. This will include involvement in all aspects of patient care. In the meantime, you will have extensive opportunity to learn the skills required of a Diagnostic Radiographer to prepare you for your future career.
  • Complete extensive independent and educator led study to meet the requirements of the University of Exeter to proceed through the degree programme.
  • Due to the nature of this collaborative degree process offers made following the selection process are conditional on your further acceptance to the University of Exeter programme. Successful candidates for university admission will meet the entry requirements indicated in the job description and the University's page for the programme.

Job responsibilities

To learn and perform a range of radiographic imaging procedures, as detailed within the apprenticeship programme, within the Diagnostic Imaging department under the supervision of a qualified radiographer at all times.

Within the boundaries of existing competence, adhering to the NDHT Radiation Safety Policy and national and local standard operating procedures/protocols.

Under supervision, perform high quality imaging and undertake appropriate training and assessment and works in accordance with Trust policy.

Is accountable to the Supervising Radiographer and must immediately report any fault errors or incidents to the supervising radiographer.

Works to a consistently high standard and ensures radiation doses are kept to a minimum using the ALARP principle; understands the use of good collimation and other dose reduction factors.

Assesses and justifies referrals under Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017, IR(ME)R, following practitioner guidelines. Includes the assessment of complex acute cases (e.g. polytrauma) under the guidance of the Supervising radiographer as required.
