Band 3 Trainee Therapeutic Radiographer Apprentice (BSc Hons Therapeutic Radiography Apprenticeship at University of Hertfordshire)

This is a fantastic opportunity to gain a BSc (Hons) degree in Therapeutic Radiography from the University of Hertfordshire, and join our friendly team at the Radiotherapy department in the Berkshire Cancer Centre!

Applications are welcomed from a variety of backgrounds, including recent college or sixth form leavers, current health and social care or NHS staff, existing degree holders, or those wishing to seek a career change in order to kick start their professional journey within the NHS!

  • This apprenticeship will be delivered as a 3 year BSc honours degree programme in Therapeutic Radiography from the University of Hertfordshire, with on the job training at our Radiotherapy departments in Reading and Bracknell.
  • Academic lectures will be provided both at the University, via virtual learning platforms, and onsite clinical teaching within the hospital setting where appropriate.
  • The period of employment for this role will start after September 2024 depending on candidate availability, with a programme start date of January 2025.
  • The successful candidate will receive specific academic support and teaching led by an approved higher education institution, whilst employed by the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

You will gain knowledge and experience in all aspects of radiotherapy service delivery, including patient care, pre-treatment and planning, treatment calculations and provision of precise radiation treatment regimes, and quality assurance of treatment plans and equipment.

Additionally, there will also be a minimum of 20% protected time available for academic University attendance, distance learning, seminars or other educational activities.

The department will fully commit to support the trainee's education and professional development throughout the period of the apprenticeship and post qualification.

About us

The Berkshire Cancer Centre at the RBFT provides fully CHKS accredited Radiotherapy treatment facilities across both its Reading and Bracknell health spaces, and is currently equipped with two GE CT scanners, four Elekta Linear Accelerators, a superficial X-ray unit, and a high dose Brachytherapy unit.

All treatment choices for patients are underpinned by the latest national guidance for radiotherapy services, including advanced treatments such as SABR, DIBH, VMAT and Adaptive radiotherapy.

Since 2020 the department has also been recognized as a 'Centre of excellence' for its innovative provision of Surface Guided Radiotherapy, in alliance with Vision RT.
