Job summary

Applications are warmly welcome to join a specialist multidisciplinary team contributing to the provision of our SSNAP A-rated stroke service. We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic Consultant Stroke Physician to join our dynamic team.The post involves working on the Acute Stroke Unit and supporting hyperacute stroke service and stroke/TIA clinics in the University Department of Stroke Medicine at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading. This a replacement post, in order to support our current service, and enhance the TIA service model.

Although the advert and job description is for a post managing patients on Acute Stroke Unit, we would welcome applicants who are interested in a more varied job plan. Many of our consultants work across geriatric medicine, acute general medicine and neurology. We would welcome consultants interested in supporting our neurology service, or those wishing to work with geriatric medicine/acute internal medicine service. Since receiving the University Department Accreditation in 2021, the stroke service is looking to appoint a research lead to expand the research portfolio, with dedicated time to support the role.

Main duties of the job

This is a 10 PA (DCC/SPA 8.5/1.5) replacement substantive consultant post, which involves working on the Acute Stroke Unit at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading.

The post holder will be expected to:

  1. To provide, with colleagues, hyperacute stroke management (intravenous thromboysis, hyperacute TIA and HASU ward round) for patients admitted under the care of the stroke team.
  2. To manage the patients on an acute stroke unit, working closely with colleagues in the multidisciplinary team and providing consultant support to the medical team.
  3. Enhance and support outpatient stroke clinics, focusing on secondary prevention and life after stroke, at the Royal Berkshire Hospital and two of our satellite hospitals (West Berkshire Community Hospital and Townlands Memorial Hospital).
  4. To provide on-call cover for stroke on a 1 in 8 rota. On-call is Category B with 5% on-call intensity supplement.
  5. Prospective cover for each other's annual leave will be shared equally between the consultant team
  6. Provide clinical advise and support to the stroke CNS team
  7. Active participation in monthly clinical governance meetings within the department.
  8. Participation and involvement in meetings and other business in the stroke department
  9. Responsibility for the educational supervision and clinical supervision of trainee doctors, and participation in the training of medical students and student physician associates.
