About us
Following the consolidation of all services onto one site in 2005 the Department of Elderly Care has undergone major expansion and development. It now provides acute and rehabilitation services both on and off site in all main subspecialty areas.
In September 2023, the department was awarded the status of University Department of Elderly Care Medicine, following a successful application to the Recognition of Excellence scheme of the University of Reading.
Elderly Care Medicine is a busy department within the Trust with 20-40 acute elderly care admissions seen within a 24 hour period. In addition, in 2022 the department had 5035 inpatient spells and saw 998 outpatients. The department has 120 inpatient beds across five acute wards. Whilst the majority of these are acute elderly care beds, some are on our designated hip fracture unit. Our community geriatricians support inpatient rehabilitation and step up and down care across 3 community hospitals in Berkshire West. We also have community geriatricians who have developed and manage a successful hospital at home service, which is now seeing over 2000 patients per year and has evolved into a Frailty Virtual Ward service. All our consultants within the department have strong sub-speciality interests
