Job summary

We are looking to appoint a 1WTE locum doctor at FY2/FY3/IMT or Specialty doctor level, to provide inpatient care for patients with long term conditions at West Berkshire Community Hospital. The post is to start ASAP and ends 6th August 2024, to fill a gap in the GPVTS scheme.

The successful candidate will be expected to join the ward medical team of advanced nurse practitioners and specialty doctors to provide day to day medical care and review of the patients on Donnington and Highclere wards under the supervision of Dr Sarah Logan Community based Consultant in Elderly Care and Dr Hamid Sultan, Consultant in Neurorehabilitation.

Main duties of the job

Ward work includes the clerking in of new patients transferred from other hospitals and home with arrangement for appropriate investigations as necessary, daily ward review of inpatients, advice to nursing staff on the ward, writing in the medical notes, referral to other specialists when required and completion of discharge paperwork.

The locum doctor will be expected to attend consultant ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings where patient rehabilitation progress is reviewed and discharge plans are made. The post holder will be directly involved in communication with patients and relatives and able to offer advice to health and social care colleagues regarding rehabilitation on the wards.

The locum doctor will be expected to make every effort that patients are enabled to reach their rehabilitation goals and work with colleagues to ensure that the care to patients is in accordance with the NSF for Older People and other relevant guidance on good practice.

The hospital provides all those services normally associated with a very large District General Hospital; including Accident and Emergency, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Intensive Care, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Genitourinary Medicine, Ophthalmology, ENT, Maxillo- Facial surgery, Paediatrics (including a NICU), general medicine (including all major medical specialities including CCU, HASU, renal unit, ITU and gastroenterology), radiotherapy and oncology, and all the general surgical specialties.

The trust provides several services Berkshire-wide (e.g. Ophthalmology, renal). Following the principle of care closer to home, the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust offers services from many locations, including King Edward VII Hospital, Windsor, Windsor dialysis unit, West Berkshire Community Hospital, Royal Berkshire Bracknell Healthspace, Townlands Hospital Henley and there are visiting clinics in Wallingford and Wantage.
