Job summary

The objective of the post is to provide solid foundation experience and clinical skills in Emergency Medicine, while benefiting from Consultant-led supervision and guidance, dedicated monthly teaching days, based on the RCEM Emergency Medicine Curriculum, as well as opportunities to participate in Clinical Research and Quality Improvement.

Main duties of the job

Our Emergency Department comprises several well defined zones - Majors and Resus, STAT, Ambulatory, Paediatrics and an adjacent Assessment Unit (EDAU). Adjacent to the main Emergency Department is the ED Minor Injuries Unit (EDMU), staffed by ENPs and Associate Specialists.

We pride ourselves in nurturing a diverse ED team - doctors, Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs), Emergency Nurse Practitioners (ENPs) and Physician Associates (PAs). You will have the opportunity to manage a wide range of presentations in all age groups, including trauma, sepsis, mental health emergencies, cardiac arrests etc. You will be supported in your clinical work by strong Consultant and Middle Grade supervision, with clear structure and zonal allocation during your clinical shifts. We have 24 hour Middle Grade cover, and night shifts are staffed by 5-6 clinicians.

The Junior Doctor rota is managed by an experienced admin team, who accommodate annual or study leave requirements, while ensuring a balanced and sustainable service provision, with mutually flexible arrangement for swaps in the rota when and where necessary.

About us

The RBH is a busy district general hospital serving a population of over 900,000 and our ED sees approximately 140,000 patients per year with 25% of these being under 16 years old. We are a trauma unit operating within the Thames Valley Trauma Network. We have a 24hr cardiac catheterisation service and also run a 24hr stroke thrombolysis service.

Emergency Medicine is at the heart of the hospital's emergency care services and provides innovative and high quality care for patients from the moment they arrive at the hospital. It is a Consultant-led service with Consultants providing leadership and patient care on the 'shop floor' 08:00-00:00 seven days a week (including on-call cover at night). There is a strong commitment to ensure the ED is appropriately resourced to deliver high quality and timely emergency care. The trust has been and continues to be very supportive of the developments that are taking place to address the pressures resulting from increased emergency admissions and a greater acuity of cases which present.
