About us

Diagnostic imaging is at the heart of the hospital's patient management pathways. The department provides an innovative and high quality service for inpatients and outpatients, across a wide range of subspecialties. We have a strong commitment to ensure the Radiology Department is appropriately staffed to deliver a high quality and timely diagnostic and interventional service. The Trust has been and continues to be supportive of the developments needed to ensure we maintain a first class service.

The department has excellent links with in-patient hospital teams. We run 26 local and regional MDTMs and work collaboratively with other in-patient teams.

The Emergency Department and Acute Medical Units are adjacent to the Radiology department which facilitates prompt investigation of acutely unwell patients as evidenced by the successful introduction of the 24/7 stroke thrombolysis service run jointly with neurology and emergency medicine teams.

The Royal Berkshire Hospital, in conjunction with satellite units in Bracknell, Henley (Townlands hospital), Windsor (Prince Charles Eye Unit) and Newbury (West Berkshire community hospital) serves a population of 600,000. Our Emergency Department sees approximately 90,000 new patients a year. In 2022-23 the x-ray department performed 150,000 plain radiographs, 4,000 fluoroscopy and interventional procedures, 38,400 ultrasound, 44,000 CT and 23,200 MRI studies.
