Specialist Rehabilitation Engineer-Wheelchair Service

We are delighted to be able to advertise for an experienced Rehabilitation Engineer to join our busy team in the West Berkshire Wheelchair Service.

The West Berkshire Specialist Wheelchair Service provides specialised seating for patients with postural needs and mobility within the home. Patients range from child to adult and the service covers West Berkshire. All patients have a long-term mobility related condition and the majority have highly complex clinical needs.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide specialist rehabilitation engineer support to a multi-disciplinary team working in the Wheelchair Service for the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust Hospital (RBFT) in clinic and in patients' homes.
  • Assessment and prescription of wheelchairs, seating and accessories to patients' individual requirements. Planning, monitoring and reviewing treatment plans, including pressure mapping.
  • Line managing, leading and supervising members of the Wheelchair Service.
  • Lead for medical devices within the service and ensure that compliance to all relevant laws and regulations are met.
  • Manage the reviewing for appropriateness and safety of trialed equipment and safety of modifications, developing processes and procedures as necessary.
  • Supervise the management of stock and best use of equipment within the service.
  • Provide support in the moving and handling of patients and equipment.
  • Liaise with the approved repairer ensuring timely collections and repairs.
  • To undertake delegated tasks to contribute to the safe and smooth running of the service.

Knowledge, skills & experience

Essential

  • Excellent all round background in general mechanical engineering disciplines at least to Higher National Certificate
  • Master's degree or equivalent in an appropriate engineering discipline (e.g. BSc Rehabilitation Engineering, or mechanical electronic engineering, or applied science, or IPEM Diploma in Clinical Technology)
  • Registered or eligible to be registered on the Register of Clinical Technologists with the Institute of Physics and Engineering Medicine
  • Knowledge and experiences of Computer Aided Design with a working knowledge of Information Technology
  • Minimum 2 years' experience as a Rehabilitation Engineer within wheelchair services including the assessment and provision of specialist postural seating, Electric Powered Indoor / Outdoor Chairs (EPIOC's) and specialist powered wheelchair controls
  • Wheelchair and seating product knowledge

Desirable

  • Minimum 3 years' experience in the design and manufacture of technical equipment

Planning & organisational skills

  • Able to work flexibly
  • Ability to train technicians within the team to competency levels and ensure they are professionally developed
