Apprentice Midwife
Applicants must have the essential qualifications for the level 6 degree course as set out by the university (University of West London - UWL).
Shortlisted candidates will be required to upload supporting documents to UWL and the apprentice board prior to being invited to a interview. Interview will be with RBFT midwife and UWL staff; this date is to be confirmed.
The Apprentice Midwife will be funded on their current band and pay scale to undertake a three-year degree programme and end point assessment.
The hours required over the programme are specified by the NMC in relation to both theory and practice. RBFT and UWL will support the Apprentice Midwife to gain the knowledge and skills to achieve registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
Main duties of the job
The training programme combines both academic and work-based learning across the maternity service.
The Apprentice Midwife must drive or be able and willing to travel to placement as required and work different shift patterns according to the placement including long and short shifts, night shifts and on calls.
We have places available for the course starting April 2024. Applications must meet the eligibility criteria outlined below:
o Applicants must be employed within the RBFT maternity unit.
o Applicants will need occupational health clearance from RBFT.
The Apprentice midwife is a developmental post which enables individuals to undertake the midwifery degree apprenticeship programme. The programme combines work-based and academic learning between the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust (RBFT) and an approved Higher Education Institute(HEI).

- Displays excellent two-way communication with women, families and colleagues. Is able to overcome barriers to understanding when the womans first language is not English or has a learning or hearing difficulty.
- Understands the importance of the woman as the centre of her care. Demonstrates understanding that he/ she consult and involves women in decisions about their care and wellbeing. Demonstrates understanding of fundamental legal practices related to consentand the prevention of abuse. Provides holistic; culturally sensitive; respectful; non-judgemental care.
- Understands the principles of human and environmental factors when working in teams and applies this to ensure safe team working.
- Develops competences and practices relevant clinical skills required to deliver care to women and babies as outlined by the NMC. Ensure that only competencies that have been achieved are undertaken without direct supervision and recognise the implications andconsequences of practising outside capability.
- Is able to support women with responsive infant feeding, helping women to gain skills and confidence with attachment and positioning and immediate care of new born babies.
- Practices in accordance with the Trusts protocols and guidelines.
- Confident and competent in competencies related to their current role.
- Is able to maintain contemporaneous records relating to the woman/babys condition.
- Recognises deviation from normal and takes timely and appropriate action to address /report to the Registered Midwife.
