Job summary

Royal Berkshire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust have an exciting opportunity for a Locum Consultant appointment to our Critical Care team for a period of 6 months with the potential to extend to 12 months.

Based at the Royal Berkshire hospital, this is a 10 PA post for a Locum Consultant qualified to work in Intensive Care Medicine. Applicants with a second CCT in a relevant specialty would be welcome. The expectation is that the clinical commitment to ICU and the second specialty would total 9 PAs a week with 1 SPA. Less than full time applications are actively welcomed, recognising the importance of variable job planning to ensure a sustainable career.

The intensive care unit at Royal Berkshire Hospital is funded for 18 level 3 beds with a total bed base of 24 beds. Our department is currently rated 'Outstanding' by the CQC and was winner of the ICS 2022 Intensive Care Unit Trust of the year. The unit has a strong reputation in digital technology with over 10 years of experience of a dedicated ICU clinical information system. We have a strong research team and offer ultrasound and echocardiogram training with a fully BSE accredited member of the Consultant team in addition to a number of FICE/CUSIC trained Consultants. Staff wellbeing is a priority with multiple interventions including dedicated recognised time for a wellbeing lead for the unit and on unit clinical psychology support for both staff and patients.

Main duties of the job

You will join a team of 16 dedicated ICU Consultants who all have dual accreditation with either Anaesthesia, Acute Medicine or Emergency Medicine which supports excellent relationships with these departments. The continued expansion of the Consultant workforce represents a change in the provision of our services to ensure a high quality service to patients but which is also flexible, responsive and provides a rewarding work schedule. Our Consultant group includes the previous Thames valley ICM TPD, previous FICM dean, previous FICM RA, three FICM examiners including the current deputy chair, three ESICM examiners and directors for multiple resuscitation courses (APLS, ALS, ATLS, FICE).

Applicants must be fully registered with the GMC and hold a CCT/CESR/CESR(CP) in Intensive Care Medicine (or equivalent) or be within 6 months of obtaining CCT/CESR(CP) at the time of interview
