Job description
Job responsibilities
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the trust for the appointment of Physician Associates within the department of Orthopaedics.
The post holder/s will get to work alongside a team of doctors of varying levels of experience to provide a high quality service to patients in RBFT. The post holder will work alongside the multidisciplinary team and be based in the department of orthopaedics.
The post holder is expected to participate in all aspects of the patient pathway as appropriate and will be expected to perform delegated duties utilising clinical skills and knowledge. The post holder will initially take part in supervised fracture clinics and ward duties, liaising with junior doctors and ward sisters and staff, and in facilitating patient admissions, pathways and discharges. It is a practical subject, and eventually, as the role progresses it is envisaged that the role will also include on call duties, minor procedures such as fracture manipulation or reduction of dislocations. There is the possibility of developing an assistant role in theatre, with participation in minor procedures such as wound closure.
The physician associate will be allocated time in clinics, where under the supervision of senior doctors or consultants, they will be taught the diagnosis, management and treatment options for the common orthopaedic conditions. Ultimately it is envisioned that the PA may develop a specific subspecialty interest, and progress to a more specialised role within the department.
They will be expected to liaise with other professionals and specialties as required and complete necessary documentation relating to their patients. The post holder will be supervised by a designated consultant and will also have individual mentors to overview their career development.
It would be envisaged that the role would be developed flexibly over time in accordance with the needs of the service. It is preferable, but not essential that the Physician Associate/s will have had experience in orthopaedics before joining. The Physician Associate/s will undergo a period of training, supervision and accreditation to activities relevant to the department.
The Physician Associate/s will have a role in helping to facilitate and improve the placements of the PA students from the University of Reading and developing and expanding PA roles within the RBFT.
