Job summary

Core Midwife needed within the Maternity Assessment Unit/Triage

We are looking for a full or part time midwife to join our dedicated and experienced team.

The Maternity Assessment Unit is the front door to the Royal Berkshire Maternity Unit. The team within work flexibly, alternating between the triage phone, labour assessments, acute issues arising in both the antenatal and postnatal period and seeing non-acute, planned appointments.

The Post-holder will be an experienced autonomous practitioner, with at least 2 years rotational, post registration experience, They will be confident in effective communication both on the telephone triage line, and whilst working clinically in the busy Maternity Assessment Unit, having the ability to initiate appropriate action and utilise available resources to ensure safe and effective care in the correct location.

The role will involve a combination of day and night shifts both 7.5 hours and 11.5 hr shifts 7 days/week and participate in the hospital on call rota.

The role will offer lots of exciting opportunities including basic Ultrasound scanning, assisting with Midwifery-led ECV clinics, exposure to both low-risk and highly complex maternal/neonatal cases offers a wealth of variety and experience. Appropriate training will be given where required.

Main duties of the job

Demonstrate expert clinical skills to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care, guiding more junior staff to deliver effective, holistic, person-centered care.

Display sound analytical and critical thinking ability in complex and rapidly changing situations.

Assess, plan and implement individualised care by effectively triaging both virtually and face to face, assisting women, birthing people and their families with decision making about ongoing care.

Have knowledge of Trust Escalation and Unit Diversion Protocol, including implementation of Unit Diversion when instructed to do so.

Assist with the evaluation of care provision, supporting the Department Managers in the development and improvement of the Maternity service.

Supervise and assess student midwives, and junior staff.

Develop own skills, taking responsibility for continuing professional development and performance, maintaining own portfolio in accordance with post registration requirements

Assist with appraisals and development plans of more junior staff.

Over 4700 women per year choose to birth at the Royal Berkshire Hospital.The service covers West Berkshire, Reading, Wokingham and parts of South Oxfordshire. The acute service is provided within the maternity block at the Royal Berkshire site with satellite consultant led clinics at West Berkshire Community Hospital and Bracknell Health space. Small teams of geographically based community midwives who link to a named obstetrician provide community services Including four continuity of carer teams.

We are proud to be one of the first District General Hospitals to implement a Rainbow service - enhanced antenatal care for women who have previously suffered the loss of a baby.

We have an established Maternity Voices Partnership and co-produce many service improvements informed by service user feedback. The strength of this relationship was really evident during the COVID pandemic through the work we did to keep women and partners informed and involved in service changes.We have a strong dedication to research and innovation which makes us a health provider of choice.
