Job summary
The Royal Berkshire Hospital (RBH) in Reading is looking to recruit a full time Orthotist to add to their clinical team. Clinical experience is preferred but graduate applications are welcome.
The successful applicant will work within and contribute to develop the service striving to promote the trusts CARE values.
The service runs specialist paediatric clinics, joint diabetic and neuromuscular clinics and general orthotic clinics. All customed orthoses are sourced externally and the department encourages a strong clinician / technician relationship in order to achieve the best clinical outcome. The department supports university students and the successful candidate will be involved in their training.

Main duties of the job
Work with the Clinical Lead in the delivery of the orthotic service in both in-patient and out-patient settings at the RBHFT and satellite clinics.
Undertake clinical assessment of complex patients, including patients with co-exisiting medical conditions, who are referred to the Orthotics department by consultants, GP`s and other allied health professionals.
Use all available methods of data capture e.g. casting and measuring, to enable effect orthotic design and manufacture.
Carry out clinics within the Royal Berkshire hospital and also be able to run a satellite clinic in the surrounding areas
Be able to effectively communicate with orthotic manufactures at a high level in the prescription and subsequent manufacture of the required orthoses.
Be able to successfully assess the orthoses following manufacture, ensuring correct specification to enable best clinical outcome.
Be able to successfully run an orthotic speciality within the department e.g Diabetic, neurorehab, paediatric clinic, lycra clinic.

Be able to successfully fit all types of orthoses to a high standard and arranging follow-up appointments where appropriate, to re-assess clinical outcomes and effectiveness.
Use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication methods to communicate effectively with patients and carers.
Be legally and professionally responsible for all aspects of your own work, including the management of patients in your care as an autonomous practitioner.
Manage your orthotic caseload effectively and efficiently, ensuring that each orthotic design is not rushed or compromised due to poor time management.
Maintain accurate and comprehensive patient records in line with professional standards of practise and department guidelines. This will include writing patient specific reports, discharge letters and the use of electronic patient records (EPR).

- BSc Degree-Prosthetics & Orthotics or equivalent Higher Diploma (OPTEC)
- HPC registered
- Evidence of further training applicable to the role of an Orthotist, e.g. experience in the use of lycra garments in the management of cerebral palsy and other neurological conditions.
- Evidence of significant continual professional development (CPD)
Desirable
- Full member of the British Association of Prosthetists & Orthotists (BAPO)
Experience

- Band 5 and/or band 6 experience
- Experience in basic I.T systems
- Supervisory experience of a junior orthotist or student orthotist.
