Band 6 Medical Devices Training Coordinator (Clinical Engineering)

This is a secondment/fixed-term opportunity for 6 months.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a six month secondment/fixed-term post within the Clinical Engineering Team as a Band 6 Medical Devices Training Coordinator (MDTC). The MDTC is responsible for proactive planning and management of a broad range of professional user training programmes for medical devices across the Trust to enhance patient safety. This post is ideal for anyone considering a career change and will allow the successful candidate to develop their leadership skills, while leading and coordinating site based activities.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Degree level or equivalent in science, engineering, nursing or healthcare related subject or, equivalent professional qualification.
  • Specialist knowledge of medical devices, their use and application in order to make decisions on training and competency.
  • Knowledge of information management systems for training records Detailed knowledge of Microsoft office applications for spreadsheets and presentations.
  • Be highly motivated, organised with a flexible working approach to rapidly changing situations and demands as they occur.
  • Excellent communication skills with staff and customers and be able to interpret and communicate highly detailed training information to staff at all levels from junior to senior management or consultant level.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for:

  • Day-to-day administration of the training database (e-Quip) & supporting ward managers, professional users and trainers in their operation of e-Quip.
  • Managing and monitoring accuracy of staff medical devices training records & ensuring all records are up-to-date and complete.
  • Liaising with suppliers to provide user training for new equipment and refresher training.
  • Organizing and promoting classroom/virtual educational programmes.
  • Gathering and tracking data/information from each programme.
  • Liaising with the Medical Devices Safety Officer on medical device user error related incidents and reporting learning.
  • Reporting on Trust-wide compliance of medical device training and contributing to audit.

Job responsibilities

The Medical Devices Training Coordinator is responsible for the proactive planning and management of a broad range of professional user training programmes for medical devices across the Trust. The post-holder will engage with medical device suppliers to source resources, which will mostly consist of training days and materials to facilitate quality training for medical device users. In addition, the post-holder will assess the quality of training provided to the end users and provide relevant feedback to the supplier(s), whether this is delivered by external companies or Trust staff to ensure the highest level of training is achieved and maintained.

The post-holder will use a Training Needs Analysis (TNA) electronic application to formulate statutory and bespoke KPIs on training, and training compliance at user, ward, and care group level, providing regular reports on the training needs and compliance of the Organisation to relevant areas within the Trust. He/she is responsible to act on those needs by liaising with Practice Educators and Clinical/Department Leads/Managers across the Trust, providing advice and assistance to arrange any necessary training to maintain Trust compliance and, for maintaining the centralised staff medical devices training and competency records

The post-holder will explore online and blended learning models for medical devices including general training on medical device safety and will liaise with technical and clinical staff to identify and share examples of best practise in the safe use and operation of medical devices, building this knowledge into learning material for current and future training.

The post-holder will liaise with the Medical Devices Safety Officer (MDSO) to investigate training needs following incidents and safety alerts involving medical devices and will work with the MDSO and Risk Management Lead to prevent or limit repetition of medical device related incidents.
