An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Clinical Engineering team for a Clinical Technologist in the care of medical equipment, to undertake the maintenance of medical devices to support the treatment of patients in Clinical Areas and Wards throughout the Trust.
Main duties of the job
Responsibility for carrying out servicing and repairs of medical equipment.
Teamwork is essential, so it would be expected that the post holder would both provide and receive guidance and supervision to and from other Clinical technologists who understand the equipment used.
Ensure that medical devices are serviced, repaired and maintained to an appropriate standard.
Travel to other sites will be required to ensure maintenance is carried out at each location.

Job responsibilities
The Clinical Technologist in this role will be responsible for the care of medical equipment. This involves the repair and maintenance of medical devices to support the treatment of patients in Clinical Areas and Wards throughout the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.
The post is based in Clinical Engineering, where there are over twenty technologists providing a maintenance and repair service for approximately 17,000 medical devices across 6 sites Royal Berkshire Hospital, Prince Charles Eye Unit (Windsor), Windsor Dialysis Unit, Bracknell Health Space, Townlands Hospital (Henley) and West Berks Community Hospital (Thatcham).
Main Duties
The post involves the support of medical equipment in all its aspects ensuring that the equipment operates effectively and safely with a minimum downtime.
As a member of the Engineering Team, the Post-holder will be expected to:
- Deliver service support of medical devices including acceptance, safety checking, repair and calibration of medical equipment to the relevant technical standards.
- Liaise with clinical, technical staff, and manufacturers to identify faults and repair medical equipment. This will include working in clinical areas.
- Assist users in the safe and appropriate use of medical equipment that lies within their area of responsibility.
- Ensure that all work is carried out in accordance with departmental procedures and quality systems.
- As required to take part in service and repair work outside the Trust in order to meet the department contractual responsibilities.
- Participate in Rotas and where required be responsible for supporting the service provided by Clinical Engineering in all their aspects.
- Monitoring and reordering spares and consumables required in order to provide a continuous service and minimise downtime.
- Liaise with clinical Staff to ensure that equipment is used safely and in accordance with manufacturers instructions.
- Identify areas in which the provision of service may be improved, informs the section manager and other relevant parties in order to action the necessary changes.
- Attend relevant meetings with manufacturers to obtain and provide feedback on Medical devices, performance and spares.
- Inspect, clean, test and repair all equipment library devices. This will involve coming into contact with equipment contaminated with bodily fluids, biohazards and chemical cleaners/disinfectants.
- Keep relevant records of service and repairs in the clinical engineering database, and maintain trending information on usage of infusion devices within the trust.
- Collate feedback and analysis of faults with the aim to reduce the chance of similar faults reoccurring.
- Respond appropriately to breakdowns with the aim to leave the equipment in a serviceable state, or if not, to ensure that clinical staff are aware of its condition so that they can make alternative arrangements.
- Participate in a program of planned preventative maintenance and electrical safety testing of all relevant medical equipment.
Managerial
- Maintain systems that enable other member of the Department to be aware of the condition and performance of the equipment under the Post-holders care.
- Prioritise and manage own workload in accordance with section policies and competing service demands.
- Review and propose changes to own working practices and procedures in areas where efficiencies or improvements have been identified.
- To contribute to the implementation of actions arising from MHRA and Manufactures Safety Alerts.
Teaching and training
- Assist in training, development and advise junior staff in the discharge of their duties.
- Assist in the training of nursing and clinical staff in the safe use of equipment.
Professional
- Keep up-to-date of technical developments by attending appropriate manufacturers courses and professional seminars.
- Maintain an appropriate continual professional development programmes with the aim to acquire and maintain Clinical technologist registration.
- Attend all obligatory Trust courses / Training.
Miscellaneous
- Implement and ensure compliance with quality systems adopted by the department and the Trust.
