The South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Partnership fully integrates the pathology services delivered on behalf of the Partner Trusts within the Integrated Care System (ICS) footprint; Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Biomedical Assistant (Higher Level) to support the Scientific and Consultant teams in the department of Histopathology at the Rotherham Hospital Site.Rotherham Histopathology currently processes all Histopathology Specimens from both The Rotherham Hospital Foundation Trust and Barnsley Hospital Foundation Trust. This equates to approximately 30,000 histopathology requests per year, 1200 non-gynaecological cytology specimens and 800 andrology specimens.

The post will be based at the Rotherham Hospital Foundation Trust.Working hours are split between two shift patterns, alternating between 0800-1600 and 1000-1800, Monday to Friday.

There is also an expectation that the successful candidate will participate in weekend working on a rotational basis.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be required to undertake roles in specimen reception, specimen preparation and processing as well as a range of other duties including computer data entry, operation of laboratory equipment, filing and retrieval of specimens, glass slides and paraffin blocks as well as digital slide scanning.

Pre-analytical processing of samples to include the receipt, preparation and processing.

Deal with direct queries from Medical Staff, Nursing Staff and other Service Users including telephone enquiries and taking appropriate action as necessary.

To assist Scientific Staff in laboratory activities.

To store and retrieve biological material.

To digitally scan slides in preparedness for reporting and multidisciplinary team meetings.
