A vacancy has arisen for a Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly and hardworking team in the Clinical Chemistry department at Sheffield Children's Hospital, which forms part of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology Network. SYBP is hosted by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (STH). The successful candidate will rotate between acute, metabolic and regional newborn bloodspot screening.

We are looking for highly motivated, enthusiastic Biomedical Scientist with a flexible approach to work.

Participation in the out of hours services is an essential requirement, once deemed competent in the relevant areas. The OOH acute service is provided 24/7, 365 days.

Main duties of the job

Applicants must possess an IBMS accredited degree in Biomedical Sciences, ideally with relevant experience in Clinical Chemistry, and hold current registration with the HCPC. If applying for a Band 6 role, candidates must have completed the IBMS specialist portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry.

Ensure all tests are performed efficiently within the assigned time and in accordance with established protocols to the required standards.

Assist in maintaining high scientific and technical standards.

Maintain complex pieces of laboratory equipment to ensure accurate and reliable results are produced for patients.

Participate in out of hours rotas covering the 24/7 routine Biochemistry service.

To be accountable for own professional actions and work for long periods of time without direct supervision.

Assist in monitoring quality standards, perform audit as directed in line with service needs.

Monitor stock levels and assist senior members of staff with ordering and organising stock as required.

Participate in regular CPD activities to maintain up to date knowledge and experience

Please also note this vacancy is banded dependent upon applicants experience relevant to this post. The banding of the successful applicant/s will start at Band 5 unless applicants meet the necessary threshold of skills and experience required to start on Band 6.
