Senior Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine and Ultrasound

Job summary

The appointment is to commence in September 2025 for a fixed term period of 1 year in the first instance. FRCEM is essential. The post does not award a National Training Number. As this post is not recognised as a 'training post', full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise is required, and if the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK sponsorship will be required. The duties of this post are equivalent to ST4+.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will take part in the Middle Grade rota with 80% of their time being for clinical duties.

The appointed clinical fellow will be expected to assess and manage all categories of patients presenting to the ED.

The post holder will have the opportunity to be involved in the hospital trauma team receiving critically injured patients by land and air from across the region. There will be opportunity to develop their trauma team leadership skills as well as developing general resuscitation skills with the support of the ED consultants.

The post holder will be expected to provide direct and indirect supervision of junior staff members in their clinical work.

The post holder will be responsible to the consultants in emergency medicine, in the management of all patients presenting to the department including those attending follow-up clinics and those admitted as in-patients.

20% of successful candidates' time will be spent developing the in-house point of care ultrasound curriculum, and they will have a close working relationship with our POCUS lead Dr Chris Yap.

The Emergency Department at the Northern General Hospital is a large adult-only city department with 125,000 new attendances each year and acts as the Major Trauma centre for South Yorkshire.

The directorate also manages a satellite nurse-led Minor Injuries Unit (20,000 new patients) across the city. This ENP led and is open from 08:00 until 20:30 every day. Although not on the NGH site the MIU comes under the umbrella of the ED and as such we are responsible for the care provided there.

Emergency Medicine and Acute Medicine are components of the Acute and Emergency Care Directorate. The Directorate is focused on providing high quality medical care as well as providing high quality consultant led major trauma care to patients from South Yorkshire, North East Derbyshire with excellent outcomes.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered with the GMC with a licence to practise
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Evidence of life support courses e.g. ATLS, ALS, APLS/EPLS.
  • MRCEM Qualification

Desirable

  • Focused Ultrasound in Intensive Care, Focused Acute Medicine Ultrasound, Postgraduate certificate in point of care ultrasound, Level Two Ultrasound, or other advanced clinical ultrasound clinical qualification.
  • FRCEM or alternative relevant post-graduate qualification (e.g. Master's degree).
  • Level One USS Signed Off

  • At least 5 years clinical experience post qualification including 12 months Emergency Medicine as a middle grade in the UK
