Job summary

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint 0.8 WTE Band B Community Dentist. This is a permanent post based within the Community Dental Services team in Sheffield.

Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Main duties of the job

Provision of a range of dental services in accordance with approved Trust plans and policies. These include treatment of individual patients, prevention and dental health education services, dental screening and training of undergraduate dental students and professions complementary to dentistry.

The remit of the Community and Special Care Dental Service includes provision of dental treatment for clients with physical and/or learning difficulties, mental health problems, medically compromised patients, the dependent elderly (including domiciliary visits), dental phobics, and also care to the general population in areas of poor NHS dental provision.

Community Dental Services is a clinical directorate of the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital which is a part of the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The service comprises of Special Care Dentistry for adults together with a paediatric community service. These are two discrete services both recognised as separate dental specialties by the General Dental Council.

  • NHS primary dental care performer number (or eligible to obtain one).

  • Postgraduate qualification relevant to the work of the Salaried Primary Dental Care Service

  • Experience of providing dental care for child and adult patients with complex co-morbidities including those with special needs, a learning disability and/or mental health problems and the frail elderly.
  • Ability to communicate with confidence with patients and their families, carers, members of the dental team and other health and social care professionals.

  • Experience in line managing salaried dentists.
  • Experience in using alternative therapies e.g. hypnosis, acupuncture in treating patients.
