Job summary

We are looking for a full time/part-time permanent Ward Clerk/Receptionist to support the medical and nursing team in the administration of patient care in the Critical Care Department. The critical care department is based at both the Royal Hallamshire and Northern General hospitals and the team work flexibly in covering the service at both hospitals.

Main duties of the job

As part of the team you would be responsible for the maintenance of patient records, computer data input and general clerical duties. There will also be a responsibility to staff the main reception area of the Critical Care building at NGH. In this role it will be necessary to liaise with other departments throughout the hospital and be responsible for greeting and managing visitors to the units.

Applicants will be educated to GCSE level, including English at grade 4/ C or above (or equivalent) and have significant clerical experience working with the public. The applicant will work effectively as part of a team, demonstrating excellent communication and interpersonal skills and have a high regard for confidentiality.

Previous NHS experience, an NVQ 2 in Business Administration and previous experience with computers and Hospital Administration Systems are desirable.

Critical care in Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (STHFT) comprises of three units.

  • D floor Critical Care at the Northern General Hospital (NGH)
  • E floor Critical Care at the Northern General Hospital (NGH)
  • Critical Care Department at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital (CC RHH

Critical care is the care provided to patients who require intensive monitoring and / or the support of failing organs. We are a CQC outstanding directorate delivering care to the highest standard. We have a highly motivated MDT who continually strives to ensure our service meets the needs of our patients.

The Critical Care units admit around 3000 patients per year. The Ward Clerk team is a small team who work flexibly across both sites to cover the service needs.
