Job summary

two whole time Clinical Research Fellows to the General Surgery Department based at the Northern General Hospital with an additional Honorary Contract with the University of Sheffield.

The appointment is to commence October 2025 for a fixed term period of 12 months renewable for a further 12 months if mutually agreed. MRCS or equivalent is essential. The post does not award a National Training Number. As this post is not recognised as a 'training post', full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise is required, and if the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK sponsorship will be required. The duties of this post are equivalent to ST3+ level.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will have 1 clinical day per week as well as being on the ST3+ non elective rota block. The rest of the time will be spent by the appointee on their research project as well as assisting with the Directorate's recruitment to the wider research portfolio.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered (or eligible to be registered) with the GMC with a licence to practise
  • Basic Medical Degree
  • MRCS

Clinical experience

Essential

  • A minimum of 3 years full time postgraduate training post Foundation Year 1 (or equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) which will be in a specialty training programme in the relevant specialty (General and/or Vascular Surgery) or as a fixed term specialty trainee in the specialty or shall have equivalent experience and competencies.
  • Minimum of 12 months NHS Clinical experience (excluding clinical attachment)
  • Clinical judgement: experience in making clinical decisions, knows when to seek help and able to prioritise need.
  • Operative skills: demonstrates an aptitude for operating including unsupervised in selected procedures.

Desirable

  • Experience in General Surgery at a Registrar level
  • Satisfactory completion ATLS/CCiSP/Basic Surgical Skills course
  • Experience in working in Hospital at Night environment

Research

Essential

  • Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate
  • Identified a research project leading to MD or PhD.

Desirable

  • Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements e.g. degrees, prizes, awards, distinctions, grants, publications of relevant study or laboratory and/or clinical research material in peer review journals, presentations at regional and national level, other achievements.
