Job summary
We are looking to appoint a number of Specialty Registrar Doctors in the Plastic Surgery Directorate at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHSFT. The appointments are to commence as soon as possible for a fixed term period of 6 months in the first instance, extendable to 12 months by mutual agreement. MbChB and MRCS or equivalent is essential. The posts do not award a National Training Number. As these posts are not recognised as a 'training posts', full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise is required, and if the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK sponsorship will be required. The duties of this post are equivalent to ST3+ Level
Main duties of the job
The plastic surgery department is split into elective surgery (skin cancer, breast reconstruction, general plastics and head and neck) based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and emergency surgery based at the Northern General with the Sheffield Burns Centre and the Hand Centre where the elective hand surgery service is based. There are 16 consultant surgeons, one Associate Specialist, 7 SPR's, one hand fellow, 3 CT's, 3 trust grade posts and 1 FY2.

There is opportunity within this large and prestigious unit to expand on clinical, operative, educational and academic skills which will assist in becoming competitive for recruitment to higher plastic surgical training programmes.
Ward rounds and trauma conference are held daily at the Northern General Hospital. Under the guidance of the Consultant Staff, the post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day management of elective and emergency patients as well on the Burns Unit. The successful candidate will, subject to competency, have some independent operating, in the form of minor operating lists, for skin cancer and for trauma, as well as access to lists in the main theatres. Experience in ward rounds, out-patients and operating lists will be obtained at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. On call commitments will cover both the adult hospitals as well as paediatric trauma at the Sheffield Childrens Hospital.
