Job summary
The appointment is to commence August 2025 for a fixed term period of 6 months or 1 year by mutual agreement. FRCS (Tr&Orth) or equivalent is essential. The post does not award a National Training Number. As this post is not recognised as a 'training post', full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise is required, and if the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK sponsorship will be required. The duties of this post are equivalent to ST8, appropriate to an individual holding a Certificate of Completion of Training.
Main duties of the job
This is a six months or one year appointment suitable for a senior Orthopaedic trainee who wants to specialise in Knee Surgery. The successful candidate will work with the three knee Surgeons employed by STHFT (Mr Hampton, Mr Hancock and Mr Stoddard). The focus of the department is on knee preservation treatments. During the post, exposure to a wide range of knee conditions will be experienced. This will include cruciate and collateral ligament reconstructions, multi-ligament knee injuries, meniscal preservation and advanced arthroscopic procedures. The fellowship provides extensive exposure to the management of patellofemoral instability, including trochleoplasty, tibial tubercle osteotomies and single/double level osteotomies. Primary arthroplasty is also undertaken including total knee replacement, unicompartmental knee replacement and patello-femoral replacement.

STHFT is one of a small number of Trusts Nationally that has a licence to carry out cartilage regeneration procedures such as Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation and Fresh Osteochondral Allograft transplants. The department is also a meniscal transplant centre and thus the successful candidate will gain experience in complex joint preservation surgery. Elective surgery will take place at the new state of the art Sheffield Elective Orthopaedic Centre at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. There will be opportunity to be exposed to both general orthopaedic and knee specific trauma at the Northern General Hospital with involvement in lists with the knee consultants working on the major trauma on call rota. This post is not suitable for a fellow wishing to gain experience in revision knee replacement surgery.
