Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for Registered Adult Nurses to apply for the two-year, MSc Midwifery (pre-registration) with Sheffield Hallam University.

This opportunity will be funded by NHS England who will fund salary (up to AfC mid-point band-5), tuition fees and placement tariff. On completion of the course, if the successful candidates have met the NMC (2019) Standards for Proficiency for Midwives, they will be eligible to be registered on the midwifery section of the NMC register.

The two-year NMC approved course will provide the successful candidates with a wide base of knowledge and skills aligned to national policy which meets the NMC requirements for future midwives.

Main duties of the job

The programme is 50% theory and 50% practice based.

Theory will be a blend of face-to-face teaching at Sheffield Hallam University, project-based working, case studies, independent study and online resources. It will allow the successful candidates to develop their knowledge and skills in the care of women and their babies in the antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal periods, as well as in the care of the newborn baby and how to practice safely and effectively as an autonomous practitioner. It will encourage critical thinking and teach the successful candidates how to apply an evidence-based approach to support decision-making in clinical practice.

80% of the theory will be delivered online as distance learning. There will be nine weeks of face-to-face teaching on campus at Sheffield Hallam University across the two years.

Clinical placements will encompass community, antenatal and postnatal experiences, and labour ward/birth centres within the employing NHS Trust Maternity Unit.

The clinical placements will allow successful candidates to apply evidence-based theory into clinical practice to achieve the required proficiencies for registration as a midwife.
