Job summary

Coagulation at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust forms a major part of the Haematology department within the Laboratory Medicine directorate, with a reputation both nationally and internationally for it's quality service, repertoire of tests performed and experience both laboratory-based and clinical.

With departments based at both the Royal Hallamshire (RHH) and the Northern General Hospitals (NGH) we provide diagnostic and support services to inpatients, outpatients and General Practitioner patients in Sheffield and surrounding areas, and specialist services to national users.

Currently we have a vacancy for a 0.4 WTE (15 hours) Senior Biomedical Scientist to be responsible for platelet function testing in both bleeding and thrombotic disorders, including Anti Platelet factor 4 related disorders such as HIT, VITT and AV-VITT.

The successful applicant will be expected to participate in the 24/7 service provision on completion of relevant competencies/training, as well as contribution to extended core working as defined in AFC terms.

Main duties of the job

To be accountable for own professional actions and work independently for long periods of time without direct supervision.

Work as required in the various sections/sub-sections in the department to ensure the maintenance of the accuracy and integrity of the diagnostic testing process.

Assist in the preparation of work rotas, schedules and staff rotation in consultation with other Advanced Biomedical Scientists.

Possess and develop high levels of specialist knowledge and skill to enable interpretation of a range of complex patient investigations and performance of complex analytical procedures.

Work to Quality Management principles and constantly seek to improve the quality of every element of the service provided and as such will:Perform regular service auditsAssist with Clinical audits andActively look for new methods and tests and work with management to push these forward

Interpret and report results (including those obtained by other laboratory staff) and determine the relevant follow up actions to take, this is complex and sensitive information that must be accurate and may have medico-legal implications, it will include:Entry of results (including those generated by others) into the LaboratoryInformationManagement SystemSome authorisation of both normal and abnormal resultsOrdering further laboratory proceduresAdding technical and clinically relevant comments

Specialist coagulation services include investigations of Haemophilia and allied disorders, Thrombophilia, Antiphospholipid antibodies, platelet function and ADAMTS-13. The Specialist sections of Coagulation are currently centralised at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. The Department is equipped with Sysmex CN6000 analysers on a GLP track for coagulation, ACL TOP from IL for thrombophilia testing in addition to a number of other analysers including Chronolog platelet function equipment. The department is fully UKAS accredited to ISO 15189 standards. The RHH Coagulation laboratory operates a 24/7 coagulation service including specialist coagulation testing.

  • HCPC registered biomedical scientist
  • Post graduate qualification equating to Master's level in a relevant subject such as FIBMS (Haematology) or MSc (eg Pathological Sciences or equivalent) or IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma (Haematology), or equivalent evidence of extended practice.
  • IBMS Specialist portfolio (Haematology) or equivalent experience.
  • Evidence of continual professional development

Desirable

  • Further Management training.

Experience

  • Extensive experience in a UKAS accredited coagulation Laboratory
  • Experience in Audit procedures.
  • Experience with a wide range of Coagulation techniques.
