Job summary

We have a vacancy for a Healthcare Scientist Assistant within the Andrology Department. This person will provide technical support to the Andrology Biomedical Scientists in routine clinical areas of work. They would be expected to work under either direct or indirect supervision and undertake all practical aspects of diagnostic semen analysis, post vasectomy semen analysis and sperm cryopreservation.

The post holder would also provide support to research projects as and when required and to participate in departmental audits and process and equipment validation.

Main duties of the job

  • Participate in all aspects of diagnostic and post vasectomy semen analysis, subject tothe direction of the Andrologists, observing good laboratory practice at all times.
  • Receive semen samples from men attending the clinic and obtain essentialinformation from the patient, the accuracy of which may affect test outcome.
  • Support the laboratory and clinical staff when and where required.
  • Participate in general laboratory housekeeping duties according to procedure.

About us

Andrology is a small team made up of 4 administration staff and 3 scientific staff. There is a close working relationship with the Assisted Conception Unit within Jessop Fertility.

The Andrology service comprises a small team of staff providing highly specialised diagnostic and clinical service to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust and the wider region. Its principal role is in the provision of diagnostic semen analysis and post vasectomy semen analysis.

Under strict regulation by the HFEA, the laboratory also maintains the region's largest sperm bank which is used for fertility preservation, mainly for patients undergoing cancer chemotherapy treatment.
