Job summary

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals have an exciting opportunity to join our new and developing mental health team. We have a number of opportunities for band 6 Mental Health Practitioner or a Band 5 with a view to gaining training, experience, and support over a set period and with the opportunity to move into a band 6 post on successful completion.

From education and prevention, to crisis and specialist care -our team work in partnership with our patients, communities and partners to help the people of our region feel safe, understood, believed in and cared for. There is a great variety to the role which involves working with all specialities involved within the Trust.

You will be working at the interface between physical and mental health and will bring your knowledge and expertise to support the clinical teams in the Emergency Department and in-patient services across Sheffield Teaching Hospital sites.

The Mental Health Team works alongside Psychiatric Liaison to improve the safety and quality of care given to people with co-existing mental and physical health problems.

Main duties of the job

To provide mental health support to patients in the Emergency Department and across other areas of Sheffield Teaching Hospital's ensuring their safety within clinical areas and/or during escort duties.

To be responsible for the initial provision and/or the maintenance of high standards of care for patients in Sheffield Teaching Hospital's.

To provide professional leadership in relation to the day-to-day management of patients requiring Mental Health care and support.

To follow the patients' Mental Health Risk Management Plan as devised by Psychiatric Liaison staff, Lead Nurse - Mental Health or a Duty Psychiatrist.

Where appropriate, to formulate care plans in relation to the patient's mental health needs in conjunction with other mental health professionals and the patient but to adhere to plans put in place by the assessing Mental Health Team including Psychiatric Liaison services.

To fulfil the relatively autonomous role of Mental Health Practitioner in a non-Mental Health setting, working to established policies and procedures but willing and able to use professional decision-making skills and discretion as required.

To use critical assessment skills to address new or ambiguous matters/circumstances and to seek support as required.
