Job summary

We are looking to appoint to a Whole-Time Locum Consultant in Emergency Medicine to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust based at Northern General Hospital. This post is fixed term for 6 months.

We would welcome applications from candidates across the full spectrum of experience, from those who have recently completed training to those who have well-established careers.

Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will, together with Consultant colleagues, be responsible for:

  • Providing a 24/7 consultant-led Emergency Department assessment team to ensure the safe, timely and effective assessment and subsequent management of all patients attending the ED.
  • Providing consultant opinion for all patients referred for emergency admission and attending the ED. This will include the provision of an immediate opinion and intervention for seriously ill patients at the request of junior ED staff.
  • Working with our Acute Medical Team providing Consultant cover to SDEC
  • Taking responsibility for ensuring the appropriate specialty destination for each patient and determining whether discharge home is appropriate.
  • Coordinating the junior staff to provide a single assessment as part of the acute medical take.
  • The successful candidate will work according to the terms and conditions of the national consultant contract.

Essential

  • Registered (or eligible to be registered) with the GMC with a licence to practise
  • Name on the specialist register for relevant specialty or eligible within 6 months of the date of the interview.
  • If an applicant is UK trained, they must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • Fellowship of Royal College of Emergency Medicine or Equivalent.

Desirable

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Manages the difficulties of dealing with complexity and uncertainty in the care of patients, employing expertise and clinical decision-making skills of a senior and independent/ autonomous practitioner.
  • Demonstrates the underpinning subject specific competencies to enable practising as a Consultant in EM as evidenced by portfolio.
  • Clinically evaluates and manages a patient formulating a prioritised differential diagnosis initiating an appropriate management plan with the ability to review and adjust this depending on outcomes of treatment.
  • Critically reflects on own competence, understands own limits, and asks for help when required.
