Job summary

An opportunity has arisen within the Neurology department for a Medical Secretary.

This post is based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of this role is to provide a comprehensive and efficient secretarial service to a Consultant, along with many important duties that can be found below and in the Job Description.

Clinical Neuroscience is based at both the Royal Hallamshire Hospital (RHH) and the Northern General Hospital (NGH) site. It is the service provider for South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, North Lincolnshire and North Nottinghamshire servicing a population in excess of 2.2 million. Inpatient rehabilitation is provided by the Directorate and there are inpatient Neurorehabilitation facilities at RHH and NGH.

Essential

  • Educated to GCSE level or equivalent including English at grade C/4 or above or equivalent experience.
  • RSA/OCR stage 3 word processing or audio typing plus ECDL - (or evidence of equivalent experience) or AMSPAR diploma or equivalent diploma level qualification.

Desirable

  • Educated to A Level standard or equivalent.

Experience

Essential

  • Extensive secretarial/clerical experience or extensive office based work / admin experience
  • Experience in audio typing.

Desirable

  • Experience of working with patient pathways and the 18 week referral to treatment target.
  • Knowledge of Trust data systems e.g. Lorenzo, ICE, G2.

Further Training

Essential

  • Understanding of patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines.

Desirable

  • Awareness of medical records issues e.g. Data Protection, Information Governance.

Special Skills/Aptitudes

Essential

  • Good computer and keyboard skills with the ability to use Microsoft packages including Word and Excel.
  • Good communication and organisational skills.
  • Flexible approach to working.
  • Ability to work efficiently on own initiative and as part of a team.
  • Empathy for patients and understanding of the Trust's PROUD values.
  • Plan, allocate and delegate tasks to support secretarial staff to meet service demands.
  • Propose changes to policies and procedures. Involved in service development or improvement initiatives.
