The appointment is to commence as soon as possible covering Gastroenterology from 6 March 24 until 4 September 24. MRCP or equivalent is essential.
The post offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in one of the largest Gastroenterology units in the country and recognised as one of only 23 centres in the world as a centre of excellence by the World Endoscopy Organisation. In addition to general gastroenterology services offer many tertiary services including parenteral home nutrition, tertiary hepatology services including TIPSS and PleurX service, transplant outreach clinics, specialised endoscopy services incl pill capsule (oesophagus to colon), DBE, EUS, ERCP, advanced polypectomy etc, GI physiology, Cancer and small bowel disease, IBD are among the subspecialities. There is close collaboration with the GI and liver surgeons, GI radiology, histopathology, cancer medicine and palliative care
Main duties of the job
This list is aimed at covering the majority of potential duties:
- Supervise, monitor and assist the CMT and foundation trainees (F1 and F2) in the day-to-day management of patients.
- Liaise between nurses, other junior doctors, patients, relatives and senior medical staff.
- Attend and participate in ward rounds, outpatient clinics as timetabled.
- Take part in rostered emergency medical work (GIM rota based NGH and/or RHH).
- Maintain continued professional development.
- Attend weekly educational and multidisciplinary sessions.
- Undertake audit (as appropriate).
- Teach student doctors as directed.
- Attend appropriate induction in each hospital and new department.
- Undertake all necessary mandatory training.

About us
The Northern General Hospital is the home of the City's Accident and Emergency department which is also now one of three adult Major Trauma Centres for the Yorkshire and Humber region. A number of specialist medical and surgical services are also located at the Northern General Hospital including cardiac, orthopaedics, burns, plastic surgery, spinal injuries and renal to name a few.
A state-of-the-art laboratories complex provides leading edge diagnostic services. The hospital also provides a wide range of specialist surgery such as orthopaedic, spinal cord, hand and kidney transplantation.
The Royal Hallamshire Hospital has a dedicated neurosciences department including an intensive care unit for patients with head injuries, neurological conditions such as stroke and for patients that have undergone neurosurgery. It also has a gastroenterology department, a large tropical medicine and infectious diseases unit as well as a specialist haematology centre and other medical and surgical services.

Clinical duties will include ward based working with experience in both luminal and hepatology firms with supervised 2x outpatient clinics and an optional endoscopy training list per week if appropriate. Participation in the GIM on call rota and the opportunity to participate during daylight hours in a speciality gastroenterology rota consultant supported. The Royal Hallamshire and Northern General Consultants will supervise this clinical service. Some sessions may be flexibly worked depending on space limitations in the outpatient and endoscopy departments.
The ward based working is at the Northern General Hospital with 3 clinical teams (2 luminal 1 hepatology) looking after 2 base ward Robert Hadfield 3 and 4 (56 beds) and outliers. We had daily Consultant led ward rounds, daily board rounds and supported MDT ward rounds in nutrition, inflammatory bowel disease and alcohol liason services. There is a strong team ethic and working practice and we have close working relationships with GI surgical services, GI physiology and Pharmacy. The post is not a formally approved training post (ie it does not hold NTN status). However it is possible that some of the clinical components of the post may be recognised as counting towards training in gastroenterology/hepatology (to be negotiated with the Training Programme Director).
