Job summary
An exciting new opportunity is being offered at Weston Park Cancer Centre (WPCC) for early career Registered Nurses in the post of Staff Nurse and Early Researcher in Cancer care. The post holders will spend 50% of their role gaining clinical experience working in specialist cancer care settings and the remaining time building academic and practical experience in research.
The 2-year programme includes a clinical rotation between the WPCC inpatient wards, day case unit and the outpatient departments and fully funded study of 4 Masters modules in clinical research at Sheffield University School of Health and Related Research (SCHARR). The post has been designed to also provide opportunities for practical research experience through placements with the Cancer Clinical Trials Centre and working alongside the nurse Researchers in Residence, cancer experience, based at WPCC. This clinical rotation, practical research experience and academic education will prepare the post holders to become confident, competent oncology nurses and early-stage researchers in cancer care.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for 2 enthusiastic, dynamic nurses with a keen interest in research and evidence-based practice who are seeking opportunities to further develop their clinical skills and nursing career.
The post holders will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to deliver cancer services as well as pursuing independent research projects related to their clinical rotations and university modules.
Applicants must demonstrate the ability to work autonomously, have an interest in research and cancer care, be self-motivated, but also work as part of a team.
Weston Park Cancer Centre provides specialist oncology clinical care as well as being a leading centre for multidisciplinary oncology research. Nursing services at Weston Park Cancer Centre have an established track record of nurse-led research with particular strengths in patient experience, innovations in care delivery and Late Effects of Cancer treatment. Weston Park Cancer Centre is part of Specialised Cancer Services at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS FT. It provides specialist non-surgical oncology services, including radiotherapy and systemic anti-cancer therapy such as chemotherapy, to patients from Barnsley, Chesterfield, Doncaster & Bassetlaw, Rotherham and Sheffield as well as supra-regional services for some rarer cancers.

This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term contract basis for a period of 24 months due to the post being recruited as part of a limited term project within the Trust. The fixed term contract status of the post holder will be reviewed in accordance with the Trust's legal obligations regarding fixed term contracts taking into consideration the requirement for the post to be maintained as a part of the projects implementation and the timescales associated with this.
Please also note any secondment must first be agreed with your current line manager.
All staff recruited post February 2020 are required and it is a condition of employment that they are also able, to undertake duties at any of the other sites where Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is responsible for delivering cancer treatment activity. It is anticipated that this may include the hospitals at Barnsley, Chesterfield, Rotherham, Doncaster as well as any other sites within the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Cancer Network.
