Job summary
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint enthusiastic individuals on a whole-time basis as Advanced Clinical Fellows, for a 12-month period. Any applicant wishing to complete the Fellowship on a less-than full time basis will be considered equally. The post does not award a National Training Number.
The Advanced Clinical Fellowships (ACF) can be done out of programme or post-CCT. If undertaken out of programme, the intention is that it would count as the Specialist Interest Area (SIA) part of Anaesthesia Stage 3 training, and subject to prospective approval from the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) and appropriate progress, will be counted towards CCT. Should a Fellow wish to count this training towards their CCT, they must be eligible to undertake their SIA year by the date of commencing the post.
Successful applicants must commence the post within 2-9 months of appointment.
As this post is not recognised as a 'training post', full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise is required, and if the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK, sponsorship will be required. The duties of this post are equivalent to Stage 3 Specialty Training (ST6+) OR appropriate to an individual holding a Certificate of Completion of Training.
Main duties of the job
The clinical posts would be split approximately 60:40 between clinical and non-clinical practice, with the aim of providing time to complete meaningful quality improvement, educational projects, or research depending on the Fellow's area of interest. The Fellow should strive to develop expertise in technical and non-technical skills associated with their area of working, in addition to developing systems and processes within the service

Job description
Job responsibilities
We have Clinical Fellowships available in the following areas:
- Emergencies & Trauma Anaesthesia
- Hepato-pancreato Biliary & Upper Gastrointestinal Anaesthesia
- Neuroanaesthesia
- Obstetric Anaesthesia
There is also the option of undertaking an Academic Fellowship, with on-call duties and an element of elective clinical work incorporated as part of the role. Whether this research time can be counted towards CCT will depend on the applicants specific circumstances, and therefore applicants are strongly encouraged to contact us in advance in this regard. The primary purpose of the clinical work will be to assist the service, but there will be opportunities within this for the Fellow to enhance their technical and non-technical skills.
The overall benefits of the Fellowships include, amongst others:
- Become a true expert in a subspecialist area of anaesthesia
- Development of technical and non-technical skills through recurrent exposure to challenging cases
- Integration into regular theatre teams, within a friendly, supportive department
- Dedicated time to develop non-clinical practice, for the benefit of the Fellow, the department, and our patients
- An opportunity to submit work for presentation at national and international meetings, as well as submission for publication
- On-call experience in the relevant sector (subject to service requirements)
Each Fellowship will have a Fellowship Supervisor to provide both clinical and non-clinical guidance.
The structure of the Clinical Fellowships are based around the 2021 RCoA Anaesthesia Curriculum, which enables HALOs to be completed during the Fellowship. As approximately 60% of the time would be spent undertaking clinical practice in the chosen subspecialist area, assuming the Fellow achieves the desired competencies, the relevant HALO can be completed as part of the SIA training. The remaining part of the SIA curriculum* can be achieved by completing one of the other non-clinical domains:
- Management and Professional and Regulatory Requirements
- Safety and Quality Improvement
- Education and Training
- Research and Managing Data
*Note, at time of writing, the non-clinical SIAs had not been approved by the GMC.
Any other additional training requirements that need to be completed as part of SIA training, will still apply for example Multiple Trainer Reports.
Should the prospective applicant be post-CCT, or not wish to count the Fellowship towards their training time, these educational sign-off specifics will not necessarily apply.
We would strongly encourage applicants to contact the Advanced Clinical Fellowship Lead, Will Tomlinson, prior to application, to confirm eligibility and discuss their plans. Email: William.tomlinson@nhs.net.
