Senior Clinical Fellow in Rheumatology
This post is a Senior Clinical Fellow in Rheumatology. It is based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.
The candidate will work with both inpatients and outpatients, within our existing team of junior doctors, and will also contribute to the rota which includes weekends.
Main duties of the job
The appointee will work within a team of junior doctors, which consists of 3 Registrars, 2 IMT3 doctors and 2 Core Specialty Trainees s to support both the inpatient and outpatient work of the department. As above each StR is allocated within a consultant team, rotating on a 6 monthly basis.
Ward duties
The post holder will work as a member of the rheumatology team including Core Specialty Registrars, Registrars and the Consultant staff to ensure high quality care for rheumatology inpatients. The rheumatology team are responsible for the care of up to 6 rheumatology inpatients, and also provide a visiting service to a number of other patients located across both the RHH and NGH sites in related specialties. As part of the Registrar team, the post holder will also be responsible for reviewing ward referrals in association with the on-call consultant of the day, and also taking calls from referring GPs.
Outpatient Clinics
The post holder will do 4 rheumatology clinics per week with close consultant supervision, initially in a supernumerary capacity with an increasing caseload as training progresses. Experience in a range of rheumatology subspecialties including early arthritis, connective tissue disease, adolescent, spondyloarthritis and sports & exercise medicine is available in additional to general rheumatology.
About us
The Rheumatology team presently comprises 12 NHS consultants with a wide range of special interests. We have 3 specialist rheumatology registrars, 2 IMT3 doctors and 2 junior trainees (one GP trainee and one core medical trainee). Our department is supported by a team of dedicated nurses which includes our Matron, 4 clinical nurse specialists, 3 biologics nurse specialists, one lupus nurse specialist and a senior sister who manages the remainder of our nursing team, who rotate between our in and outpatient facilities.
The Rheumatology inpatient and outpatient facilities for adults (over 16 years of age) in Sheffield are based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital (RHH), a 775 bedded hospital, serving a population of 750,000. Our in-patient facilities comprise of approx. 6 beds at the RHH and are shared with the wider care group.
The majority of the outpatients are seen in our own dedicated department on B floor of the RHH where we have the use of 2 ultrasound machines and a polarising microscope. Currently upwards of 50 separate Rheumatology clinics per week are run through our out-patient facilities at RHH.
