Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Cellular Pathology at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.

The IBMS Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology is required for this post. Applicants who are a significant way through completing the portfolio may be considered and would be recruited as a Registered Biomedical Scientist (AfC Band 5) until completion of the Diploma (this is expected to take no more than 12 months).

The post will mainly be based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital but may require rotation to both the Northern General Hospital or Chesterfield Royal Hospital as the service requires.

Interest in and understanding of molecular tumour profiling and the use of this technology within Cellular Pathology would be advantageous.

Participation in the laboratory Mon-Fri 8am - 8pm working arrangements, weekend and bank holiday rotas when rolled out is expected of all staff.

Main duties of the job

  • To be responsible for the production of accurate and timely routine and specialist Laboratory testing.
  • Assist in maintaining high scientific and technical standards.
  • Promote and maintain a high standard of relevant education and training
  • Adhere to all Trust and departmental policies.
  • As a SBMS - act as mentor to trainee and registered Biomedical Scientists and other scientific staff (Band 6)

Please also note this vacancy is banded dependent upon applicants experience relevant to this post. The banding of the successful applicant/s will start at Band 5 unless applicants meet the necessary threshold of skills and experience required to start on Band 6.

Laboratory Medicine provides a comprehensive diagnostic service to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and the surrounding community. The Histopathology Department is based on three sites (the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, the Northern General Hospital and the Chesterfield Royal Hospital), processing 80,000 requests per year. It offers excellent training in all aspects of cellular pathology technique.
