Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for an Occupational Therapist with broad clinical experience and proven specialist skills in acute trauma and rehabilitation to join us as part of the Major Trauma Rehabilitation Coordination Team.

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of three Adult Major Trauma centres in the Yorkshire and Humber region. The Major Trauma team is made up of Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Nursing Trauma Coordinators, supported by acute and rehabilitation consultants

You will work as part of the Therapy and Co-ordinator Team, and have close links with the wider MDT including the Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapists, Nurse Specialists in multiple fields including Head Injury management, as well as the Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine. You will be involved in both rehabilitation delivery and care coordination therefore will require excellent teamwork, communication, and prioritisation skills.

You will maintain and advance your profession specific clinical expertise by carrying a clinical caseload and supervision is provided by the Head Injury and Major Trauma Clinical Specialist OT as well as pastoral support from Senior Trauma Rehabilitation Coordinators. You will also link with local OT teams to develop your own skills and knowledge as appropriate.

Main duties of the job

  • Post-registration experience, sufficient to acquire core competencies in Occupational Therapy practice.
  • Knowledge and skills to manage a complex caseload in the field of acute trauma and rehabilitation.
  • Evidence of continuous personal & professional development
  • Good post-registration theoretical and practical knowledge of therapy practice in chosen field
  • Competency in Occupational Therapy clinical reasoning, processes & practices.
  • Support and participate in major trauma outpatient clinics
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and team working skills
  • Able to act on own initiative, organise and prioritise work and manage multiple tasks
  • Ability to complete cognitive assessment and splinting assessment.
  • Work as part of a defined team to ensure the rehabilitation prescriptions (RP) are completed in accordance with national standards and guidance for the 2019 Rehabilitation Prescription
  • Student clinical educator, or working towards

You will receive support, supervision and opportunities for continuing professional development within an environment that facilitates collaborative team working.

You will be expected to work one full weekend in four as part of a 7 day Trauma Coordination rota alongside a Trauma Nurse Coordinator.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical Practice as Highly Specialist Autonomous Professional

  • Carry a clinical caseload including complex specialist cases, requiring clinical reasoning and highly specialist therapy, planning and prioritising own work

  • Complete incident reflection form of untoward incidents and near misses, informing Clinical Service Manager and ensuring the appropriate action is implemented and learning is shared.
  • Provide evidence for governance inspections.
  • Contribute specialist professional opinion in response to a formal or informal complaints and /or untoward incidents
