Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a permanent position within the Cancer Clinical Trials Centre, delivering research support services across the Trust and University.

This is a key role within the Cancer Clinical Trials Centre (CCTC) and will require considerable commitment to ensure the continuation of a high quality support service. We are therefore seeking a pro-active individual whose skills will enable them to fulfil the role's responsibilities quickly and efficiently.

This post will provide strategic and operational management of the CCTC, ensuring its initial and long-term success against agreed objectives and provide professional leadership and management support to the CCTC Director and other senior staff on all matters concerning the development of the facility.

Main duties of the job

  • a good honours degree (or relevant experience).
  • MSc in Health/Biomedical Science related subject or equivalent.
  • proven, relevant experience of clinical research in the NHS, academic or commercial environment.
  • experience of financial management as budget holder including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, financial processes and practice.
  • experience of producing management information reports and the ability to interpret and present complex financial and non-financial information in a non-technical and easy to understand format.
  • successful track record of leading, managing and motivating teams to deliver a high quality service and leading positive change.
  • knowledge of research funding sources and application procedures.
  • knowledge of NHS and University infrastructure, policies, procedures aims and objectives.
  • ability to think strategically and proactively contribute to the development of strategy within an academic/clinical environment including delivering and driving key parts of the strategy.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the CCTC Director in setting and delivering a strategic framework for the development of the CCTC and ensure that the portfolio of research and clinical trials, incorporating the associated cross-cutting themes, are managed effectively.
  • Provide professional leadership and management support and advice to the CCTC Director and other senior staff on all matters concerning the development of the facility, developing the CCTCs short, medium and long-term (5y+) objectives, leading on decision-making, service improvements, change management and performance management.
  • Manage a growing and complex portfolio of cancer clinical research trials, to ensure safety standards are met, staff are appropriately trained and skilled, and agreed regional, national and international targets are achieved.
  • In collaboration with the CCTC leadership team and Clinical Research & Innovation Office (CRIO), lead on the implementation of the governance arrangements for the Centre.
  • Ensure that operational services and their delivery are regularly reviewed for continuous improvement and service development.
  • Ensure that relevant information relating to research and its progress is communicated effectively, applying appropriate and varied means of communication to ensure that all stakeholders internal and external are engaged and informed.
  • Support the CCTC Director in the implementation of NIHR, STH, UoS and other stakeholders strategy and policies, working with clinical and research leads to ensure that research strategy and clinical strategy are mutually supportive.
  • In liaison with the STH Research & Innovation Manager, ensure that all governance and Health and Safety requirements for CCTC are identified and met, including sponsorship, regulatory approvals and compliance (including but not limited to Good Clinical Practice Guidelines (GCP), Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) principles, the UK Policy Framework for Health & Social Care Research (2017), Human Tissue Act 2004, and the Medicines for Human Use (Clinical Trials) Regulations 2004 and subsequent amendments) and NHS Confirmation of Capacity and Capability.
  • In liaison with the STH Research & Innovation Manager, and along with the CCTC Research Matron coordinate CCTC preparation for external audit and regulatory inspection by external bodies including the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
  • Identify opportunities which have a positive financial and strategic contribution to CCTC, the Trust and the University. Write strategic applications for external funding to support the CCTCs infrastructure, lead on the completion of all local and national reporting such as NIHR Annual Reports and Quarterly Reports, write and prepare Board Level documents outlining CCTC activity and performance, briefing papers, business cases and other documentation supporting the CCTC development.
  • Represent the CCTC on both internal and external committees and provide a central contact point for all CCTC related matters.
  • Provide management information/reports to the CCTC Business Executive and CCTC Operational Group, including gathering essential financial and operational information on the performance of the CCTC for reporting and presentation purposes to NIHR and other funding bodies, as required.
  • Develop new, and enhance existing, external relationships with all stakeholders in order to promote and raise the overall profile of the CCTC and its portfolio of studies.
  • Ensure that all communications and relationships with stakeholders and funders are managed effectively and efficiently, using appropriate tools for provision and dissemination of complex information to all appropriate audiences.
