Job summary

We are looking for permanent Band 5 Therapeutic Radiographers to join this Sheffield team that is part of the Yorkshire and Humber radiotherapy network.

This modern department comprises of seven Varian linear accelerators, including four Truebeam (two of which are Truebeam STX). Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy, Image Guided Radiotherapy and Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy are standard practice across the department. There is an orthovoltage & superficial unit and two new Philips CT scanners with virtual simulation and Varian RGSC gating system. We offer radiotherapy for paediatric patients and deliver SABR, CHART and TBI.

We are a clinical placement site for student radiographers from Sheffield Hallam University and all staff are actively involved in the education and assessment of student radiographers.

Main duties of the job

To participate in the organisation and delivery of an efficient, high quality service providing patient care in a treatment/simulator/clinic section of the radiotherapy department.

To be involved in all routine procedures related to the planning/treatment and care of patients, and the organisation of the department.

To rotate through all areas of the radiotherapy department as specified by the Section Lead.

To encourage the development of students by providing training, guidance and support as necessary.

Weston Park Cancer Centre is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for cancer care and research, which is part of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and provides oncology services across South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire. It is a centre for outpatient and inpatient non-surgical cancer care, and is one of the leading Radiotherapy Centres in the country.

The hospital adjoins the Sheffield University Clinical Trials Centre and there are dedicated research radiographers who co-ordinate an active clinical trials portfolio and are developing an active local research programme. The Research Centre is fully integrated within Weston Park Hospital and is credited as a pioneer of numerous modern advances within the field of cancer research.

We have a well-established programme of radiographer led role extension including breast review and mark up and radiographer on treatment reviews and we have advanced practice roles in various specialisms as well as a Consultant Radiographer. All staff are encouraged to join the various special interest groups within the department. Staff are supported and encouraged to undertake post graduate study where relevant and undertake a range of Continuous Professional Development activities.

To participate in the organisation of the daily flow of work on a treatment machine (workload 35-50 patient per day), or CT Scanner (workload 20 patients per day), or clinic providing a competent and professional service to cancer patients, carers and relatives.

To ensure the accurate delivery of technically complex treatments and maintain high quality patient care on a Linear Accelerator/Simulator/Clinic using clinical judgement and seeking guidance from senior staff as appropriate.

To deal with and support others in coping with the emotional, psychological and physical demands of the role of a Therapeutic Radiographer.

Undertake daily checks on treatment accuracy and assess patient condition, using clinical judgement and reporting problems to senior radiographer.

To facilitate decision making by working within broadly defined protocols and by using experience and clinical judgement appropriately to assess patients and technical issues.

To provide basic nursing care for cancer patients and to use skills in caring for paediatrics, the elderly and those with advanced disease.

To assess need and provide support and advice to cancer patients, their carers and relatives affected by cancer diagnosis and treatment.

To participate in the operation and maintenance of Linear Accelerator/CT Scanner and report problems to Team Leaders/Section Leads.

To prepare patient documentation, carry out treatment markings (eg tattooing), and calculate and check the mathematics of treatment plans and prescriptions with absolute accuracy.

To maintain clinical and technical records, and report problems and errors in accordance with policies and procedures.
