Job summary
As a result of an expanding regional oncology service and development of the supporting pharmacy infrastructure we are offering an exciting opportunity to join our team of pharmacists, technicians and MMAs within cancer services at STH.
This is an exciting opportunity for a consultant pharmacist to lead clinical practice to Oncology patients under the care of STH across the Cancer Alliance. The post holder will have mastery level expert practice and will manage a cohort of patients under the clinical supervision of the lead consultant for the disease site. They will provide strategic advice to improve the quality of chemotherapy prescribing and patient experience. With significant clinical leadership experience, they will lead service improvement, deliver education and mentoring across the cancer Alliance and deliver their own research activity.
Please note we are also willing to consider candidates who don't meet all the essential criteria as a progression against agreed milestones will be considered on an Annex 21 of Agenda for Change Basis.
This post is in development for submission to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society for accreditation as a Consultant Pharmacist post at the next committee.
Main duties of the job
JOB PURPOSE
The post of Consultant Pharmacist for Oncology will be expected to provide expert level care to patients across the South Yorkshire, Bassetlaw and North Derbyshire Cancer Alliance. Based within Weston Park they will have their own caseload of patients in a specified solid tumour site, including to outreach services as appropriate
The successful candidate would be expected to complete the RPS consultant level credentialing process and will use the title consultant pharmacist once both the post and the successful candidate have completed credentialling. Due to the expanding service successful applicants will be expected to work regular weekends within clinical pharmacy at Weston Park.

STH provides Oncology Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy services to a population of around 2 million patients primarily from South Yorkshire and North East Derbyshire via a hub and spoke model based at Weston Park Cancer centre. Weston Park cancer centre is a specialist tertiary referral unit with 3 inpatient wards including a specialist teenage cancer unit, as well as 37 chair day case unit and clinical trial unit supporting the Sheffield Experimental Cancer Medicines Centre.
Cancer services at STH are undergoing an exciting period of transformation with wholesale review of how services are delivered focusing on treatment closer to home and development of off-site SACT services, and renovation of the Weston Park building including the recent approval of a new multi-million pound pharmacy aseptic unit.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The post is structured around four main functions:
Expert Practice
- Fulfil the role of Consultant Pharmacist, providing leadership for the pharmaceutical aspects of SACT use in the Trust. Provide information and advice on therapeutic and cost- effectiveness measures and guide doctors and other prescribers in the composition of appropriate drug treatments for individual patients in accordance with guidance from NICE, Trust Policy and other guidelines.
- Responsible for the clinical management of a cohort of patients within STH or outreach services within a specific tumour site under the clinical supervision of the lead Consultant
- Fulfil the role of highly specialist pharmacy practitioner for patients requiring SACT therapy, developing and evaluating pharmaceutical care for patients across the Trust and beyond.
- Review prescriptions, challenge treatment choices and communicate highly complex drug and therapeutic information to senior clinicians, senior managers and other professionals in order to influence treatment options and ensure compliance with medicines legislation and avoid errors and side effects.
Professional Leadership
- To be recognised as an expert within Oncology clinical pharmacy, locally and nationally and/or internationally, demonstrating active participation in creating national healthcare policies and motivating others.
- Interpret national guidance to advise the Trust on strategies to comply with national targets or statements.
- Identify and prioritise innovative strategic development of the clinical pharmacy service to Oncology across both STH and the wider outreach services, setting long term goals in line with local and national strategy and standards, identifying and managing the risks involved and working with colleagues to extend boundaries across professions and develop overall clinical pharmacy strategy across the trust, convincing others to share the vision at a higher level.
- Provide strategic advice regarding the planning of future clinical pharmacy workforce requirements.
Education and Mentorship
- Contribute to national workforce strategy and support implementation across the Cancer Alliance
- Design, deliver and evaluate education and training for the wider healthcare team, supporting and developing the wider workforce

Research, Evaluation and Service development
- To be aware of and adhere to the Clinical Governance agenda and contribute to monitoring safe, effective and economical use of medicines following national and local guidelines, working with appropriate colleagues.
- Act as an investigator for incidents and Serious Incidents across the Trust.
- Ensure Cancer services pharmacy staff and networks are involved in clinical governance in medicines use, including audit of medicines use and review of medication incidents and other aspects of medicines safety.
- Lead on and participate in clinical audits, quality improvement projects and development and implementation of treatment protocols and guidelines for the use of SACT within the Cancer Alliance using quality improvement skills and methodology where required and linked with local/regional QI groups/bodies.
