Job summary

We have a vacancy for a Clinical Scientist for a fixed term of three years in the Medical Device Innovation (MDI) group within Clinical Engineering at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. The post will cover a number of activities under the remit of MDI, including the management and progression of development projects, the provision of regulatory advice and support in relation to medical devices and their use. This post holder will also input to clinical specialist scientific services (such as visual electrophysiology and functional electrical stimulation) delivered by the group, through direct clinical delivery and/or provision of scientific and technical support.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide high quality scientific and technical input to specialist clinical and scientific services delivered by the Trust
  • To participate in the design, development and construction of innovative electronic systems to appropriate Quality System standards, taking on project management roles as required by the Section Head.
  • Contribute to the delivery and development of the highly specialist services delivered by Clinical Engineering. Specific activities include complex data capture and measurement as well as scientific interpretation of those measurements
  • Actively engage in research and service evaluation projects, contributing to the development and implementation of new techniques according to clinical need
  • Support the Lead Scientists and Head of Clinical Engineering to develop the services offered within the objectives of the Directorate and the Trust

About us

Sitting within the Directorate of Medical Imaging & Medical Physics (MIMP), the Department of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering (MPCE) employs almost 200 staff, providing a variety of scientific and clinical services to the Trust. The Department of Medical Physics is divided into six sections, each managed by a Section Head who is responsible to the Scientific Director. The Clinical Engineering Section is divided into two distinct groups Medical Device Management Services (MDMS) and the Medical Device Innovation (MDI) group.

This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term contract basis for a period of 3 years due to the post being externally funded. The fixed term contract status of the post holder will be reviewed in accordance with the Trust's legal obligations regarding fixed term contracts taking into consideration the ongoing source of the external funding and the requirement for the post to be maintained.

  • Provide highly specialist scientific input the clinical services in Clinical Engineering
  • Interpret complex data and troubleshoot issues with specialised equipment
  • Ensure that the complex systems are used safely and accurately
  • Contribute to writing standard operating procedures, revising appropriately to ensure that they remain current
  • Work with the Lead Clinical Scientists in the day-to-day routine scientific clinical service activities to ensure the smooth running of services
  • Work with the clinical expert in interpreting measured data and provide scientific reports on clinical investigations
  • Work with the Lead Clinical Scientists and Section Head to develop clinical research profiles in accordance with the directorate objectives
  • Make and record accurate clinical measurements for both routine, clinical audit and research purposes
  • Good working knowledge of all relevant clinical equipment used in the Section, ensuring appropriate calibration procedures are followed where necessary
  • Provide scientific support to other sites as requested by the Section Head
  • Ensure that all clinical protocols are evidence based
  • Ensure the ongoing quality and compliance with Legislation of any software utilised clinically (i.e. fully evaluated and validated, and registered appropriately)
  • Maintain high diagnostic accuracy through appropriate quality assurance and audit procedures with regard to local and national standards where appropriate

  • Carry out patient management and assessment independently in line with departmental and recommended national protocols and with support from other professional colleagues

  • BSc degree at a minimum of 2:1 in an appropriate subject (e.g. Neurosensory Science/ Healthcare Science/ Clinical Engineering/ Physics)
  • Master's degree or equivalent in Neurosensory Science/ Medical Physics/Clinical Engineering
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council as a Clinical Scientist
  • Participating in a programme for continuing professional development

Desirable

  • PhD or equivalent level of knowledge/expertise in health related science
  • Evidence of completion of STP Neurosensory Science / Clinical Engineering

Experience

  • Demonstrable experience of working to relevant legislation, standards and guidance
