Job summary
This is an opportunity to join the shift engineering team at the central campus whereby the successful candidate will initially work along side an experienced operational shift technician. The post will provide practical experience and mentoring for the successful candidate to develop into a full time shift role position.
On completion of the training the post holder will be allocated to an available shift post as full time status in order to meet the demands of the service and to ensure that all works and services are carried out in a professional, effective and progressive manner and to a high technical standard, in compliance with statutory legislation
Main duties of the job
We are seeking enthusiastic and conscientious individuals to join our Estates Management shift team at the central campus where you will assist in providing an out of hours service to cover the Trusts engineering services at the above locations.
Applicants will hold a National Certificate (BTEC) C&G or ONC in mechanical or electrical engineering / building services be self motivated and able to demonstrate strong craft experience working in a building services engineering environment with complex systems.
You will be able to demonstrate a commitment to customer service, have a track record of developing and maintaining good working relationships at all levels in a large organisation. Strong interpersonal and literacy skills are essential as the job will involve direct liaison with patients, public and staff at all levels of the organisation. You should also be able prioritise work within imposed deadlines, be a team player and have initiative and drive.

Job responsibilities
To carry out mandatory and essential Planned Preventative Maintenance when required.
To participate in out of hours rota system to ensure cover arrangements for shift system at all times including annual leave, sick, compassionate, carers leave or any other shift colleagues absence.
To carry out when required, the isolation and making safe of all Electrical, Plumbing and Building Services.
To carry out first aid maintenance and repairs and/or other provisions to repair or reinstate services and facilities, especially those having an impact on patient care.
To action all calls for emergency assistance.
To deal with safely and effectively all lift related problems. Release of trapped personnel, minor repairs, ensure safe working of all lifts and liaise with Lift engineers to reinstate out of use lifts quickly.
Carry out regular inspections of the boiler house, plant rooms and other critical plant and equipment. To take readings, fill in logs etc and to report any problems.
To support day shift staff in their duties and undertake any task assigned by the Engineering Supervisor or his Deputy.
Carry out minor installation work as appropriate and assist as required to support day colleagues in or out of hours.
Be trained in all elements of other craft skills and to be competent to undertake duties in line with that training.
To possess technical knowledge and be experienced to be competent, to undertake work, including installation, planned preventative maintenance, analysis and correction of fault situations, carry out repairs to varied plant and equipment on the following installations: -
Heating and ventilation plants
Domestic appliances (including Portable Appliance Testing)
Emergency electrical generators
Load shedding systems
Air conditioning systems
Emergency lighting systems
Commercial catering equipment
Gas installations
Washer disinfectors
Medical gases and scavenging systems

Must be self motivated and be able to work without supervision most of the time.
Must be able to work on own initiative and manage work effectively.
Must possess high-quality interpersonal and communication skills.
Have a good working knowledge of other departments and how the service provided by Estates can impact upon their operations.

In exceptional circumstances, liaise with relatives and patients as to special needs regarding building services e.g. extra heating/cooling where patient is critically ill.
Interpret and work from instructions, drawings and specifications as appropriate without supervision.

To be able to prioritise the order of the work load to provide the most efficient and effective response and to minimise disruption to hospital services.

Be proficient in the use and application of the BMS system and security systems. Action alarms arising there from.
Attend to and action all fire alarms using existing procedures.
Remove and replace fire alarm zones as and when required.

To action all calls from staff regarding air conditioning problems, to adjust temperatures as needed, repair all faults on A/C systems where practical, monitor correct operation and to ensure proper building environment at all times.
Provide complete co-operation with RHH security staff to maximise effectiveness and flexibility in the provision of a combined Estates/Security out of hours service.
